The possibility of a prisoner exchange has been mooted ahead of the Ukrainian film director Oleg Sentsov’s appeal against his 20-year sentence before Russia’s Supreme Court tomorrow (Nov 24).
According to a report by the Ukrainian website joinfo.ua, Yuri Grabovsky, the lawyer of one of two Russians captured in the Luhansk region last May, told the TV channel 24 that Sentsov and political activist Oleksandr Kolchenko might be exchanged for his client Alexander Alexandrov and Evgeny Evrofeev.
“It will definitely not be [the detained Ukrainian pilot Nadezhda] Savchenko. From what we heard, the discussion was only about Sentsov and Kolchenko,” Grabovsky said, suggesting that the chances of an exchange taking place were at 50:50.
Earlier this month, the Russian Defence Ministry had confirmed that Alexandrov and Evrofeev had not been Russian servicemen at the time of their detention, but were in the service of the militants of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic.

At the 2011 edition of Cannes, Lars von Trier caused quite a stir when he implied that he could understand how someone -- someone like himself -- could become a Nazi. (Read More: Lars Von Trier Declared "Persona Non Grata" at Cannes, Effective Immediately) As part of the publicity for his new film "Nymphomaniac," von Trier has released a new tape-over-his-mouth press photo (above) that symbolizes his decision to no longer participate in any press interviews. Instead of doing press for "Nymphomaniac," von Trier will gradually release a still and a short narrative that, according to a press release, "playfully unveils the multilayered universe of 'Nymphomaniac.'" Perhaps high off his involvement with the Dogme95 movement, Von Trier also revealed in the press release that he hopes to start a new film genre with "Nymphomaniac," digressionism, wherein digression is the departing from the main subject. The chapter teasers will gradually be revealed on the film's.

Survivor: Caramoan Review, Season 26, Episode 5
“Persona Non Grata”
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS
When Survivor announced their cast of returning players for this second “Fans vs. Favorites” season, the one that stood out was Brandon Hantz. Although he provided memorable television in his first appearance, he’s also an unstable guy who demonstrated awful gameplay. Putting him back on the island felt like a bad idea, and it was only a matter of time before he lost his marbles. When his fragile state combines with nasty weather conditions and other volatile personalities, it creates a powder keg that’s ready to explode. This week, a minor squabble with Phillip winds up Brandon and pushes him to new levels of rage. His choice to dump out the rice and beans is stunning even when compared to other wild moves. Never has a player so openly destroyed a tribe...

Director: Lars von Trier
Writer(s): Lars von Trier
Producer(s): Zentropa’s Louise Vesth & Marie Cecilie Gade
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgård, Stacy Martin, Shia Labeouf, Jamie Bell, Christian Slater, Connie Nielsen, Willem Dafoe, Jesper Christensen, Jens Albinus, Nicolas Bro, Udo Kier, Shanti Roney, Hugo Speer, Uma Thurman, Mia Goth and Charlotte Rampling.
Intro: Since his segment in To Each His Own Cinema, it could be said that Von Trier is in the prime of his career with Antichrist and Melancholia arguably being praise-worthy pieces of art and easily rank among his best. Now that we're all caught up on the lives of the teenagers at Grant High, it's time to settle into The Secret Life of the American Teenager's summer routine. In "Defiance" we saw how everyone's paths all led to... summer school!?!
Teen dramas always need a common setting to keep the characters in each other's lives. Hello it's the reason there's a party on practically every episode of Gossip Girl! But summer school? Eh, it did make for a great 80s flick.
While I don't really understand why Amy would want to spend the summer taking classes, I'll just go with it for the flow of the story. Besides, she and Ricky are so adorable lately, even when they argue! That's love right there.
Sure, it'll be helpful for Amy to have to take less courses next year when Ricky starts college, but her other excuse that she did...

A few hours separate us here in the UK from the end of the world according to Lars Von Trier so let’s greet the cataclysm with some rather lovely looking character banners and a new clip from the film, shall we?
The main players in this doomsday scenario are all present and correct, each facing the looming planet Melancholia in their own way. John Hurt is my favourite, welcoming the end of days with a weary smile and a drink in his hand. If you’re not seen anything of the film, which has been very well received on the festival circuit, then check out this recent trailer which gives a flavour of Von Trier’s film while promising a whole lot more.

Character posters are nothing new and essentially a way to get audiences excited about a film in a more specific way than say, a movie poster, since typically only the star or bankable name has his or her mug prominently on display.
And yet there's something distinctly different about the character posters for apocalyptic drama Melancholia. In addition to actors Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Alexander Skarsgard, Kiefer Sutherland and John Hurt each shown dealing with the end-of-times in their own ways, the film's writer and director, Lars von Trier, also gets a character poster despite the fact that he is not a character in the film.
But for a constant rabble-rouser like von Trier, who references his bristly reputation with a Persona non grata stamp on the poster, it seems about right.
Check out all six character posters after the jump.

Lars Von Trier seems to have taken to heart the old Groucho Marx adage of not belonging to any club that will have him as a member. The director who famously ruffled feathers this spring at Cannes with his terrible Nazi "joke"--and who caused more consternation by not apologizing for it--has decided to give himself a character poster for the U.K. release of "Melancholia." What's more, his is the only one stamped with an "official" Cannes Persona Non Grata stamp. You gotta love it. But it's not just Lvt giving himself some love, as Empire have unveiled the individual one…...

HollywoodNews.com: “Melancholia” director Lars von Trier is still dealing with the fallout from his crazy comments in Cannes about being a Nazi. The whole thing has become incredibly strange, too. But it shows how a slip of the tongue in the era of instant global communication can change your life. When von Trier said, “I am a Nazi” and that he sympathized with Hitler, the word went out on Twitter in one second. And in many languages. He was denounced by the film festival, and made “persona non grata.” It’s too bad. “Melancholia” is an excellent film, and Kirsten Dunst is terrific in it. Here’s von Trier’s latest missive, delivered this morning:
‘In connection with the Iranian Vice Minister of Culture Javad Shamaqdari’s letter to the Cannes Film Festival regarding the “Persona non grata” stamping of my personality, I feel called to make the following comment:

Lars Von Trier's comments at the Wednesday press conference for 'Melancholia,' in which he joked about sympathizing with Hitler and possibly being a Nazi, racked up even more controversy today. The Cannes Board of Directors declared Von Trier a "Persona Non Grata," meaning he is unable to physically collect any awards for his film, and his future with the festival is in question. Von Trier could also face legal action from France, where anti-Semitic remarks can lead to six months in prison or a €22,500 fine. indieWIRE reported on the latest development in this scandal.

Lars von Trier’s comments during the press conference at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday have indeed created a situation. By stating that he understood Hitler, even in jest, is a joke all too unfunny.
This is what von Trier stated:
“The only thing I can tell you is that I thought I was a Jew for a long time and was very happy being a Jew, then later on came [Danish and Jewish director] Susanne Bier, and suddenly I wasn’t so happy about being a Jew. That was a joke. Sorry. But it turned out that I was not a Jew. If I’d been a Jew, then I would be a second-wave Jew, a kind of a new-wave Jew, but anyway, I really wanted to be a Jew and then I found out that I was really a Nazi, because my family is German. And that also gave me some pleasure.

Controversial filmmaker Lars Von Trier ("Dancer in the Dark," "Dogville") went to Cannes 2011 with his apocalyptic wedding movie, "Melancholia," and star Kirsten Dunst. Unfortunately for him, the only thing people are buzzing about is his apparently sarcastic comments about being a Nazi and Hitler sympathizer.
Despite his apology, the Telegraph reports that Cannes organizers have booted him from the festival. A statement from the directors says they "firmly condemns these comments and declares Lars von Trier a persona non grata at the festival."
Persona non grata or not, "Melancholia" will reportedly remain in competition for the May 22 awards -- which should at least be some consolation for Kirsten Dunst. As you'll see in the video of press conference that included the Nazi comments, the actress is clearly having the most uncomfortable week of her life.

In a lot of ways, Lars Von Trier is the ultimate punk filmmaker. His films are deeply personal and often reflect his current feelings (case in point; his attitude toward women in AntiChrist). So when it was announced yesterday that he'd made some offensive comments at Cannes while at a junket for his new film, Melancholia, I really wasn't surprised. Von Trier (who sported his new* tattoo at the festival; the word 'Fuck' on his fingers) basically said, and I'm paraphrasing here, that in a lot of ways he sympathized with Adolf Hitler and that he himself is, in some ways, a Nazi. But he clarified that he has absolutely no ill will toward the Jewish community, or any community in fact. Now it's being reported that the heads of the Cannes Film Festival have named Von Trier, 'Persona non grata'. Which essentially means he is banned from...

In the wake of the Burn Notice summer cliff-hanger, "Eyes Open" started the fall season off with a reminder that getting shot is painful.
While I understand that Michael was on the wrong side of a gun, and the writers wanted to keep a realistic feel to his injuries, I'm concerned that they're going to drag out this recovery out way longer than is necessary. Or at least interesting.
In this episode, for instance, almost every scene that showed Michael also focused on the fact that he was shot and recovering. I actually tuned out the repeated discussion between Madeline and Fiona after the second time I heard it.
Hey, did you hear that Michael Westen was shot?!?
I'm happy to say that one of the questions I asked about the overall season finally was answered. The show explained how someone just strolled up and took the briefcase after the...

Take One Action, Edinburgh & Glasgow
Want to save the world but not sure where to start? This festival should at least give you some pointers, if not rouse you into action. Its mission is to bring together audiences, film-makers and activists and to highlight pressing global issues through film. There's no shortage of material. Big issues such as global warming, hunger, the oil industry and Israel-Palestine are well covered in fiction and documentary, but it's not necessarily all bad news. There are inspirational stories, such as Persona Non Grata, about a crusader for slum justice in Venezuela, or classic doc Powaqqatsi with a live score, and even a Namibian HIV drama, in which the audience decides the ending.

By George, there’s finally a man out there who’s all talk And action!
Over the last week, George Clooney not only managed to gracefully (and handsomely) lose a Best Actor Golden Globe to Jeff Bridges, but he spent quality time with Italian girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis, organized a star-studded telethon for Haiti and, now, has even dug deep into his own pockets to donate $1 million of his own moolah. What a guy!
Let’s not forget that George had already donated a substantial amount of money to Haiti: he and his Ocean’s 11 crew of Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, Brad and producer Jerry Weintraub had already donated a combined sum of $1 million through their organization, Not On Our Watch. Which even usurps Gisele Bundchen’s humongous $1.5 million donation….no mean feat.

While working on the George W Bush biopic "W" and planning the "Wall Street" sequel, director Oliver Stone was also gathering footage for his documentary about Venezuela's controversial President Hugo Chavez. We now have the trailer for the new movie, called "South of the Border," and you can check it out below. The documentary will focus on the opposition Chavez has faced at home and abroad, especially from the Bush administration, which has been vocal in its distaste for the populist socialism espoused by Venezuela's president. Stone's previous documentaries include "Comandante," about Cuban President Fidel Castro, and "Persona Non Grata," which began as a project about Yasser Arafat but eventually became about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict when Arafat died. "South of the Border" will make its premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 2nd. It has yet to acquire domestic distribution. Trailer: If you cannot see the player, click here.
