Science and animation are tied together like a moon to a planet. While they exist on distant planes and their connection is invisible, to animate is to have a fundamental understanding of science and movement. The job of both an animator and a scientist is to understand the building blocks of reality; the former bears the burden of twisting and subverting that understanding into a form of heightened reality, a surrealism giving birth to cinema.

Amidst The Cure’s ongoing North American tour, Robert Smith has been workshopping new music. During the first of three shows at the Hollywood Bowl on Tuesday night, the band premiered a never-before-heard track called “Another Happy Birthday.”
Even by The Cure’s standards, “Another Happy Birthday” is an especially depressing song. “And your birthday is the worst day/ I’m singing to a ghost/ Happy birthday/ I forget how it goes,” Smith sings alongside lush but muted instrumentation.
The origins of “Another Happy Birthday actually date as far back to 1997. Back then, Smith mentioned the song’s existence in connection to a B-sides and rarities collection he was working on. “It’s unlike anything The Cure have done before. It’s not a verse-chorus-verse type of song, but more fluid,” he told MTV at the time.

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

La La Land may not have won the Best Picture Oscar that it seemed destined to take home, but the city of Los Angeles is still going to celebrate the film and its many contributions to L.A.-inspired nostalgia with a big concert event at the Hollywood Bowl. According to The Hollywood Reporter, composer Justin Hurwitz will be conducting a 100-piece symphony orchestra, choir, and jazz ensemble as they perform the music of La La Land alongside “original vocal recordings” from Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. There will also be “pre-show photo opportunities and a grand fireworks spectacular,” and attendees are “encouraged” to wear “vintage Hollywood-inspired” outfits. Basically, if you didn’t like La La Land already, this event would be your nightmare.

Six years ago, Emilia Clarke burst into popular consciousness during the first season of HBO's Game of Thrones. Her character, Daenerys Targaryen, began as a naive and submissive young woman who soon emerged as a far stronger personality than might have been anticipated. Throughout the course of the series, Daenerys has overcome one setback after another, rising to become a powerful ruling force. In concert with her character, Clarke has risen from relative obscurity to immense popularity over the past few years. She has been quite selective about the movies in which she's appeared since the series hit it big, starting with supporting roles in Spike Island and Dom Hemingway before she landed a starring role as Sarah Connor in Terminator Genisys (above left). Malcolm Earl "Mal" Waldron was born on August 16, 1925 in New York City. His father worked for the Long Island Rail Road. Mal started taking classical piano lessons at age seven and, inspired by his love of jazz, also learned alto saxophone. He earned a B.A. in Music from Queens College, with the G.I. Bill (he'd been drafted in 1943 and served for two years, fortunately not seeing combat) paying for his tuition. He worked in jazz, blues, and R&B contexts and made his first recording in 1952 as a member of Ike Quebec's band. In '54-56 he was part of Charles Mingus's Jazz Workshop and recorded with Mingus. Waldron went out on his own as a leader at the end of 1956 with the album Mal/1 on Prestige and quickly became one of the prolific label's house pianists. The following year he added to his workload the position of Billie Holiday's accompanist,...

Jonathan Groff said Frozen's focus on family rather than the traditional fairy-tale love story, contributed to the film's success.
The Looking star who voiced Kristoff in the hit Disney film said it was "refreshing".
He said: "It's so much about timing and I think that the message is... Frozen is your traditional fairy-tale Disney film with all the great music, and characters like Olaf - but the story was about familial love as opposed to a woman looking for a man."
He continued: "It was so refreshing - I think the concept was so refreshing - and the music was great, and so I think it was a combination of things.
"But it definitely took everybody by surprise."
Groff takes the role of Finch in How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying - The Musical In Concert - at London's Royal Festival Hall on 19th May.
