The Sick Solomons!
gab-1471219 August 2019
"Post-Nasal Dick" is the second episode of 3rd Rock from the Sun. Tommy is able to have his first kiss with his lab partner, but unfortunately picked up an illness. This illness spreads to the entire family where they feel the sensation of being sick for the first time. Dick wants to go to a wedding with Mary, but he has to feign normalcy to not show that he is sick. Sally discovers what being a mother is like. Harry dreams about Martha Stewart (in a wonderful cameo).

This is solid episode that builds up what we saw in the premiere. I really love how this family caught a common cold and thought they were dying. I guess, through their eyes, coughing and sneezing are such damaging human functions.

Quote of the episode: Dick Solomon: "It was the best of times. It was the worst of times- reading "A Tale of Two Cities." "I'm not reading 387 pages if he can't make up his mind in the first sentence.

My Grade: B+

"I come from another world." "And this is news?"

Warning: Spoilers
After Tommy has been making out with a schoolmate named Dina (Marla Sokoloff), he catches a bug that then spreads among the whole Solomon family. Now, the aliens, not having experienced an Earth illness before, mistakenly think they're dying. And this happens just before Dick enthusiastically volunteers to be Mary's date for a wedding. The real hilarity ensues when Dick downs an entire bottle of cough syrup, and *really* acts up during the ceremony.

This often very funny episode continues to build on the promise of the pilot, with the Solomons still adjusting to the idiosyncrasies of human life. Sally finds it odd that in her current guise, she is now compelled to nurture the other family members. (She makes a big vat of chicken soup, into which Harry promptly sinks his feet.) And speaking of Harry, he has an amusing dream in which Martha Stewart figures prominently. Even incidental moments, such as Dick offering comment on the works of Stephen Hawking and Charles Dickens, are good for chuckles.

The absolute highlight is when Dick and Mary dance at the wedding. Suffice it to say, Lithgow steals the entire show. Sick as he is, he is in danger of blowing the entire alien mission. It's fortunate for him that Mary doesn't take his rantings that seriously. It's also endearing that she finds him appealing, even in light of all of his wacky behavior that she interprets as mere eccentricity.

One of the most hilarious bits: Sally and Harry appearing to be turned on (!) when they experience their first sneezes. "Was it as good for you as it was for me?"

This is a very funny episode of a show that feels like it hit the ground running.

Good simple humour, with sharp writing and excellent performances.

Was it as good for you as it was for me?

Ah, "Post-Nasal Dick": the second in a long string of fantastic comedies.

In this episode, the Solomons learn what it is like to be ill-- and, of course, having never experienced the sensation before, they think they're dying, causing them to both wax sentimental on all their missions together, and possibly even blow their cover!

Filled with wonderfully snappy dialogue ("You know, you sound just like my mother." "That must be very confusing for you.") and outrageous situations, "PND" is one of the best episodes in one of the best shows of all time.
