Whoa, this is heavy

What's interesting about 'High Treason Part 1' is that this is the setup for the show's finale, and it undermines what we've come to expect from this series. Bly's storyline's been put to bed for a while, and there's no science fiction involved. Just a courtroom drama with Brisco and Bowler accused of being traitors after an insurgency into Mexico. And that's what makes it so dramatic; it's played completely straight. They're arrested, found guilty in a kangaroo court, and then . . . well I don't want to spoil it, but the stakes are raised from the outset and just continue to ratchet. It's a nail-biter, but the performances are earnest and the tone unrelentingly grim. No magic orb to save the day.

On a lighter note, it's a Pete Hutter episode (I still think he's the memorable of Bly's gang) and that means hijinks. Retconning him back to life was a stroke of genius, and as it turns out, just the shot of levity this one needed.
