Airwolf - Prisoner of Yesterday
Scarecrow-8819 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Latin American country under politically charged climate soon involves String when buddy, Doc Gifford (Campbell returning to the show), is kidnapped by revolutionaries, hoping his "serum" can help a former dictator, Mario Guzman (Michael Constantine), return to better health. Doc admits to Mario's daughter, Teresa (Julie Carmen, "Fright Night II"), who initiated the rescue operation of her arrested father from a military hospital while in a habit (with soldiers dressed as priests), that the serum wasn't real. So relocating to a ghost town in order to stabilize Mario with the hopes that Doc can help nurse him back to health, String, Santini, and Caitlin orchestrate a rescue operation. String will infiltrate the dilapidated building holding Doc prisoner, but before he can convince Gifford (who agrees to help Teresa's father voluntarily) to leave with him, they once again find too many guns pointed their direction. The episode really does a good job of making Constantine "sweat it out". Deteriorating conditions for Constantine are quite hammered home. Teresa has to serve in her dying father's stead, but isn't beyond holding machine guns on Doc in order to desperately help Mario cling to life. Eventually Teresa will need to be the voice of her father when his recorded message to the people is undermined by a former ally, Tomas (Nate Esformes), driving an armed van towards the current president's government compound. Lots of arguments about the use of threatened violence in order to organize a message to the people, inability to deny the inevitable despite efforts to save a life even though no cure is available, political challenges when two sides fail to come together for the greater good of the people as a whole, and rescue attempts that fail due to differences in opinion. Teresa wants her father to recover, reclaim his prominence, and be a voice for the people once again, but his declining health simply won't allow it: Doc will remain despite few reasons to while Teresa will need to replace the dying father no longer able to function as his country needs him. I was curious as to Doc's situation back home, because he seems destined to be heavily involved with Teresa. Doc's past is emphasized, as Mario thought highly of him, just satisfied to have him there while Teresa must learn the tough truth that he isn't some miracle man. Airwolf isn't a major factor, only swooping in when String needs to break from Teresa's imprisonment in order to stop Tomas and help spread her father's message to the people. Caitlin tries to rescue children from Tomas' oncoming van (and jet fire raining down towards it), and even gets a kiss on the cheek from Doc, but not much else. Santini makes sure to drop in with Airwolf just when String needs him.
