Sloane's revenge
gridoon202413 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
By investigating the phone records of the still-kidnapped mathematician Neil Caplan (Christian Slater, this time given more to do than on his first appearance on the show a few episodes back), Sydney comes across a name that forces his wife Elsa to confess that she is an undercover Russian agent who was ordered to seduce and marry Neil to keep an eye on his research. However, she proclaims that she truly loves him (and their son) now, and tells Sydney that a cyanide capsule will be activated inside his bloodstream within the next few hours. Jack is suspicious of Elsa and refuses to let Sydney on a mission to rescue Neil, but she sneaks away from CIA surveillance and takes on the mission herself (later to be assisted by Vaughn). Meanwhile, Sloane finds out who fired the bullet that killed Emily, and plans a horrifying revenge. "Alias" has always been a tech-heavy series, but this episode in particular is full of futuristic little gadgets, from a device that sends a recorded message that only one person can hear to another device that is planted in a cell phone and hacks into restricted CIA archives through long distances and seemingly harmless websites! Despite all that, the most memorable part of "Endgame" is the ending, or to be more accurate the endings: first an optimistic one, showing how two people's honest love can overcome the deceptions and hidden agendas of the past, and then a pessimistic one, perhaps the most shocking event in the show's history so far (along with that of "Phase One"), because it happens to a person that we never dreamed would have this fate. *** out of 4.

Rescue and revenge
Tweekums14 April 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Having managed to escaped from the CIA but losing his beloved wife Sloane is determined to get revenge on the person responsible for her death; to that end he tasks fake-Francie with using Will to access the CIA computers to get the satellite footage of the event. Still looking for missing mathematical Neil Caplan the CIA find a discrepancy in his telephone records that suggest that he is actually a member of Russian Intelligence but when confronted with this news rather than being shocked his wife states that it isn't him that is working for the Russians but her. Taken into custody she says that Neil has a device implanted in him that will release cyanide forty eight hours after it is activated... and it has been activated. Sydney is determined to find and rescue him but her father attempts to block her actions believing that Elsa Caplan could be just as duplicitous as Irina Derevko. Going behind her father's back Sydney heads to Russia then Spain on an unofficial mission. Once back Sydney and Vaughn enjoy an evening out with Dixon and his wife; an evening that will end in tragedy.

This episode sees a welcome return of Christian Slater as the captured mathematician Neil Caplan and Tracy Middendorf as his wife Elsa; they both put in good performances and have some fairly emotional scenes. Victor Garber performed well as Jack (as always) especially when it was clear that he was condemning Elsa Caplan because of his own betrayal by Irina. There were some decent action scenes and the end came as quite a shock; if you haven't watching it already it may produce quite a jump! There is also a scene that isn't for the squeamish where somebody has to have their arm cut open... I can't say just how bad it is as I looked away! While this was mostly an episode of closures one question was raised... where will the CIA's investigation into the data leak lead; things don't look too good for Will.
