Oblivion and Truth
claudio_carvalho16 November 2014
Sheriff Lucas Black learns that the contract of Dr. Matt Crower with the local hospital will be renewed in a party to raise funds for the hospital. When the drunken Dan has a car accident, the comatose Doreen has a slim chance to survive. Dr. Crower is haunted by recollections of his wife Lily and his daughter Claire due to the similarity of situations. The evil Sheriff Black proposes a deal to Dr. Crower: he would give a chance to him to go back to meet and say goodbye to his beloved wife and daughter. Dr. Crower seeks oblivion and accepts the deal. Meanwhile Caleb suspects that his neighbor has buried a corpse in his pumpkin patch.

"To Hell and Back" is another episode where the evilness of Sheriff Buck is cruel, promising oblivion to Matt and giving truth instead. It is creepy to see Doreen in coma saying "Little, Bitty Pretty One", but actually it is Matt's nightmare. Caleb has a great lesson about the damages of a gossip from Gail. This episode is completely out of sequence in the DVD box. My vote is seven.

Dr Crower confronts his demons
Tweekums5 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Note – If you are watching the series on DVD this episode is listed as 'Episode Fourteen'; this is incorrect it should be watched after 'Strong Arm of the Law', as listed here on the IMDb.

This episode is centred on Dr Matt Crower; he is still haunted by the death of his wife and child back in Massachusetts… not surprising given that they died due to him driving while under the influence of alcohol. Things get worse when he is faced with a similar case; a woman who he was chatting to at a party shortly before is rushed into the Emergency Room after a crash caused by her drunk husband. Matters aren't helped by Sheriff Buck's constant digs at the doctor; he is clearly trying to push him over the edge just as the hospital board is preparing to discuss extending his contract. Meanwhile Caleb is convinced that the old man who lives next door has buried a body in his garden.

Many previous episodes have been fairly dark in the creepy sense but this is dark due to its subject matter. It is interesting as we are encouraged to feel sympathetic for a character who killed his wife and child due to his drunk driving… of course this is helped by the fact that the sheriff is a genuinely evil character; there is a strong suggestion that the recent accident was due to him. Some may find some details of the resolution a bit of a cop-out as it suggests he might not have been quite as guilty as previously stated but I found it ambiguous enough to be interesting. Jake Weber did a great job as Dr Crower; one can feel his anguish. Caleb's part of the story was rather fun with a degree of mystery regarding just what the neighbour was burying. Overall this was a good if rather downbeat episode.
