Sweet and Sentimental
MichaelMartinDeSapio21 January 2017
Aunt Bee's birthday is coming up, and although she urges Andy and Opie not to make a fuss over her, she secretly longs for the beautiful blue bed jacket displayed in Mrs. Luckens' store window. This is out of character for Bee, who is usually a very practical woman. Aware of this practical side of his aunt, Andy dutifully purchases a set of preserve jars as her birthday gift. But then harried Mayor Stoner comes on the scene. It seems he has no time to buy a going-away present to his wife and enlists Andy to buy the bed jacket for him to give to her. It looks as if Aunt Bee is bound for disappointment when the time comes to open her presents on her birthday.

Without revealing any more of the plot, suffice it to say that this is TAGS at its sweet and sentimental best. Andy engineers a solution which makes Aunt Bee glowingly happy while teaching Opie a lesson about the unexpected joys of self-sacrifice. The last scene will make you tear up.

Earle Hagan's musical score plays a prominent role in the episode, with a magical series of chords underlining Bee's wonder at beholding the bed jacket. Bee's friend Clara also plays a key part, coming off in a more sympathetic light than usual. Of the episodes that highlighted Bee Taylor, this is one of the most memorable.

My Mom
Hitchcoc5 December 2019
I remember growing up in poverty. My mother deserved so much, keeping our family together under terrible circumstances. I remember her wanting little things but always giving way to others needs. When I watched Aunt Bee's reaction to the Mason jars I remembered when my mother had a little breakdown over something others would find trivial. This episode tugged at my heart. By the way, that mayor is a piece of work. Oh, I have one thing I'd like to mention. Why do they have that ancient phone at the police station? I keep looking for Alexander Graham Bell lurking somewhere.

Sweet

I won't go into the episode too much. I am another one that likes the funny episodes better but this one while not a favorite of mine has some good things about it. It's ok to want something others might find frivolous or unimportant. I also like how Clara who I don't always like plays a pivotal role in Bee getting her dream birthday gift.

Brilliantly Plotted but Not for Laughs

There is so much to like about this episode; I can watch it repeatedly and always find it rewarding. Aunt Bee, Andy, and Opie are in top acting form. The exchange between the store owner and Andy about what kind of gift Andy should give his aunt is just one example of outstanding writing that propels the series and especially this series into perpetuity. I have always had a small problem with the timing of when Aunt Bee opens her 1st gift until the 3rd gift but I'm willing to "suspend my disbelief" for this episode. "Sit-coms" get a bad rap by some,, and the coincidences of this sit-com are perhaps unlikely, but it is a plot coincidence that makes this whole show work so well. You will feel the whole range of emotions in this one, right through to a very satisfying ending. I know I haven't said much in the way of specifics, but trust me, this is a warm, if not so humorous, AGS.

Andy should have a heart to heart with Aunt Bea
ronnybee21121 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Instead of simply being straight-up and straightforward and just saying what she wants for her birthday,Aunt Bea expects Andy to be a psychic mind-reader and know exactly what she wants,by magic. It seems she has her heart set on a 'pretty bed jacket',an item she has never needed to have until now,and presumably nobody will ever even see her in. Somehow she thinks she must have this bed jacket,gotta-gotta-gotta have it for her birthday but she doesn't ever come out and tell Andy. Andy doesn't know she wants it,so of course he doesn't buy it. Andy and Opie buy a few small and cheap (but useful) gifts for the birthday-girl.

Aunt Bea's birthday arrives, and she opens a couple of the small gifts but when Aunt Bea doesn't see a 'pretty bed jacket' she starts crying,(crying for heaven's sake!) All the real problems in the world and she cries over not getting a bed jacket that she really doesn't need and didn't even bother to ask for. This is beyond ridiculous and Andy should not encourage or co-sign for this foolishness. How is Opie going to take his dad seriously after watching all this nonsense, and somehow losing his prize fishing rod for the privelege ?

(Watch and see yourself how the fishing-rod gets mixed in.) And what is the deal about nobody knowing how old Aunt Bea is? What kid Opie's age wouldn't get to the bottom of this or at least ask several obvious questions about the whole 'Aunt Bea's age is a secret' baloney ?

Aunt Bea is tough enough, she can take a little helpful talk from Andy I am sure.

This has a good lesson for Opie that indulging or ignoring foolishness is basically co signing for it and it can end up costing a whole lot more than imagined and it can end up involving others. Aunt Bea had her faults just like all of us,bless her fictional heart🌞

Bit of a sappy stinker in-between 2 of the series best
vitoscotti14 April 2022
Never cared for this episode. Zero laughs until a mildy good epilougue. Especially with all the classic episodes in seasons 2 & 3 this is a huge dropoff.

I prefer the big laugh episodes then heartstring tuggers.
