THE WILL LEAVES YOU NOTHING!
tcchelsey11 January 2024
Series producer and writer Robert Sherman may have borrowed an idea or two from the classic COLUMBO episode called "Suitable for Framing," starring Ross Martin, a few years earlier. In that episode, Martin kills his uncle who has a priceless collection of paintings --only he's not in the will. Surprise!

In this case, lovely Donna Mills (as Abby Reinhart) is married to a rich, older gent (played by veteran actor Kent Taylor), who also collects paintings, but drops dead. Quite similarly, Abby is NOT in his will. The clever catch is that her boyfriend, who happens to be an artist, will switch the real paintings with forgeries. Not really a bad idea, if you're a crook, that is.

To note, this is a rare episode where the suspects are not guilty of murdering the wife's husband, which was a common thread in the series. That said, they are nevertheless sinister and, even, hide Abby's husband in a refrigerator to preserve his dead body to carry out their plans.

Former movie star Kent Taylor has a bit part here as the victim, star of some classic films in the 1930s, of course remembered to all of us kids as BOSTON BLACKIE on tv. This was his final screen appearance. An outstanding actor, at one time compared to Clark Gable.

Also in the cast is popular dramatic actor Shelly Novack as Ralph. Shelly was a famous football player who switched to acting, but died suddenly a few years after this episode. Producer Quinn Martin later said his death may have been drug related. Making another appearance is Neva Patterson as Liza. Neva was always fun to watch, both in good lady and bad lady roles, frequently used by producer Quinn Martin.

Watch Barnaby match wits with this strange couple.

SEASON 4 EPISODE 14 remastered CBS dvd box set.

Two of the dumber criminals in any episode of "Barnaby Jones"!
planktonrules20 July 2021
Abby Reinhart (Donna Mills) is married to a rich and much older man. Not surprisingly, she has a young stud on the side. During one of their meetings, her husband catches them and then has a heart attack and dies. Now at this point, she's the not the heir to a huge fortune (the man's will leaves it to a founfation) but instead of just calling the EMTs or police, she and her artist boyfriend come up with a crazy plan...to keep the guy on ice for a few day and this will give her lover time to make forgeries of the dead man's paintings. What?

In addition to the couple breaking the law by shoving the body in a refrigerator, they are then blackmailed by a man who has photographed Abby and her boy toy making out together. Why not cool it for a few weeks and then resume the affair? Then, a bit later, they discuss the painting substitution as a blackmailer is listening in at the window! Clearly these two crooks are among the dumbest you'll see on "Barnaby Jones". What's next for these two knuckleheads?

The dumbness of the criminals make this one to skip unless you are the type who want to see them all! Not terrible...but not exactly logical.

This episode is one of the reasons i quit watching television ... buddy ebsen was never content with just solving a case, he had to inject them with his morality and code of ethics and every time i saw him all i could think of was jed clampet the hillbilly ... ebsens claim to fame was song and dance...he should have stuck with that
