Itchy and scratchy

Warning: Spoilers
A funny episode of The Brady Bunch where a slumber part goes wrong big time, but with a few giggles. It's hard to believe this episode debuted 52 years ago, but it still stands the test of time.

Robert Reed and EG Marshall

Warning: Spoilers
This is one of my favorite episodes. I would have rated it 10, except for all the girls' silly screaming, which was both annoying and unnecessary. EG Marshall co-starred with Robert Reed in the Defenders, a rarely seen (and very well done) drama series. In this Brady Bunch episode, Marshall plays Mr Randolph, the school principal. He doesn't believe Marcia when she claims that she didn't write that nasty remark about Mrs Denton. Oh, for the days when this was the worst thing that went on in schools. Marcia's slumber party gets cancelled because her parents assumed that Mr Randolph couldn't be wrong. Interesting. Marcia gets very emotional because her parents don't believe her. If they didn't, then she didn't want a "party or anything, ever, from them!" Maureen overacted, but she was cute. Very well done episode, compromised only by the unneeded "screaming." EG Marshall, absolutely the best guest star ever to appear on this show, improves the episode by his sheer presence.

Correction to another review

Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler:

thejcowboy22 got some of the characters mixed up near the end of their review. No offense intended, just pointing it out.

Paula was the one who actually wrote the hippopotamus comment, and confessed to Marcia at the party. Jenny was the one who was falsely accused by Marcia beforehand, and uninvited.

After Marcia finds this out, she reinvites Jenny to the party. She arrives as Mike gets pranked at the door as he lets her in.

I was too young to remember the Brady Bunch during its original run, as it debuted when I was just over 2 months old. But I always loved watching the reruns on TV.

What I didn't like was that over the years, the commercial breaks got longer which caused scenes I remember, to get cut. I eventually got the series on DVD and can enjoy them uncut.

A Gaggle of Giggling Girls!
BradyBraveJoel21 April 2020
This episode rings-in suspense from the beginning, as Jan, Marcia, and Cindy are pacing by the base of the famous Brady Stairs as they await the outcome of Mike and Carol's discussion taking place behind a closed door in Mike's den. We pan-in to a distressed-looking Mike who shakes his head and says to Carol, "I guess Jan and Cindy are in on this, too?", "Well," replies Carol, "It wouldn't be a slumber party without them," - And the plot begins! At first the boys are very glum, especially Greg, who will have to avoid one of Marcia's friends who has a hang-up on him (Paula Tardy). And then, Marcia winds up in the Principal's Office facing a stern-looking E.G. Marshall. She is accused of doodling Mrs. Denton and including a rude caption. Although we see Marcia being very adamant that she didn't do it, the official assigns her detention for the week and phones Mr. and Mrs. Brady to fill them in. Mike and Carol force the cancellation of the slumber party and all you-know-what ensues. Marcia is more upset and disrespectful toward Mike and Carol that we will ever see on the series, the boys are left dejected since they won't be able to play stunts on the girls, and Hope Sherwood, playing Jennie Wilton (Producer's daughter) left in real tears after Marcia accuses her of a set-up and un-invites her to the now back-on get-together. The shining moment for the boys comes when Mike comes in their room and announces the party to be "Back on!". "It is," asks Peter - "Yep." says Mike, while Bobby giggles boyishly, "hooray!". "What's the matter with him?" asks Mike - "Oh, that dumb dough-dough laughs at everything." - "Oh, he does, does he?" Mike leaves with suspicion. That's my favorite part! As you may incline, the party is a real girl-fest and Alice serves them all hot-dogs and potato salad (which she forgets). The lights are turned off and ghost stories begin (Eve Plumb a real story-teller!), the strange events follow! Tune-in to one of my all-time great t.v. episodes and see what happens next! Aloha, Kamaiinas. Brady Bunch rocks! Still and always...

Favorite episode, Bring on the Extended Family members of the cast.
thejcowboy226 February 2017
December 2002 an early blizzard struck the New York Metro area. It was to be my daughter's first slumber party. We decorated the dining room and living room with the usual decor. I was worrying that none of her friends would show. On the contrary, They all showed up as parents slid on the snow and over snowbanks to drop off their kids. The irony of it all was her oldest and best friend Haley lived across the street and couldn't come because of a severe cold. It seems from the first season Marcia the oldest of the three Brady girls really had to prove herself to her parents in a couple of episodes. I recall Marcia writing a best Father letter to the local paper about Mike Brady and how he should be eligible for Father Of The Year. The Slumber Caper falls under that same theme of mistrust. Marcia wants to throw a slumber party at the Brady homestead and her parents have no problem with that idea. Meanwhile, her three Brothers have other ideas. More in the lines of pranks and sabotage. Marcia's School Teacher, Mrs. Denton (Not Shown) finds a drawing in Marcia's desk drawer of a rendering of Mrs. Denton. Denton takes the etching to Principal Randolph (E. G. Marshall) for inspection and finds the drawing offensive. When asked, Marcia responded, "That is my drawing but not of Mrs. Denton but instead George Washington. Someone wrote Mrs. Denton's name below the drawing as a joke." Marcia couldn't prove her innocence and got detention after School. Mr. Randolph notifies Marcia's parents and as punishment, they decided to cancel her slumber party. This episode is a television reunion of E. G. Marshall and Robert Reed who played together in the earlier courtroom TV drama The Bold Ones. Another side note that I found interesting is Marcia's Guestlist which included the cast members, extended family related to the show. Marcia's friend Ruthie was played by Barbara Bernstein who is Florence Henderson's Daughter. The accused perpetrator of the prank in this story was portrayed by Karen Reitz daughter of Robert Reed. Lastly, the guilty party was played by the Producer's daughter ( Sherwood Schwartz), Hope Juber Schwartz as Jennie. By the way, my Daughter's party went off without a hitch and this would be the first of three slumber fests hosted by yours truly.
