An Expensive Peace

Warning: Spoilers
The Apache territory has been established but that doesn't mean the end of problems. Loggan is doing his best to stir up trouble; and even though stage coaches are passing, there are still renegade Indians that Cochise is having trouble with. Jeffords attends an Indian ceremony and is entranced by an Indian maiden, Sonseeahray. And she too is interested in Jeffords.

Jeffords has decided to marry Sonseeahray, but Loggan is there making trouble: calling Jeffords an Indian lover in the most pejorative sense of the phrase. Loggan's wife was killed by Indians, and if he could he would see all Indians dead.

Cochise tells Jeffords an Indian brave has already chosen Sonseeahray, and he is called Nahilray. But Sonseeahray also wants to marry Jeffords. Cochise warns Jeffords about such a union. But Apache women are allowed to pick their husbands, and Sonseeahray has chosen Jeffords. Thus, they are married in an Apache ceremony. They ride the white horses chosen for them to the teepee built for them.

A day after the marriage, Loggan's son claims he has had some ponies stolen. Jeffords goes to investigate with Sonseeahray and Cochise. But it's a trap by Loggan to kill Jeffords and Cochise. Sonseeahray is killed, as is Loggan and his son. The remaining white men try to run off to Mexico because they know the Army will be after them. Jeffords wants revenge on the survivors, but Cochise says no. They will be turned over to the military and will suffer the death penalty. Indeed, they are captured and sentenced to death.

General Howard appoints Jeffords as the first Indian Agent to the Apache Nation. Jeffords doesn't want it but Cochise insists he take it on. Cochise says peace will be difficult, Jeffords is needed.
