A Psychological Look At Muldoon
ccthemovieman-129 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
"Before I die, I just want to tell someone that my husband actually a read a book," says Lucille after Toody is going nuts because his television had to go to the repair shop. It seems Toody watches TV all night, every night. He was a "couch potato" before someone invented the phrase!

Anyway, "The Sacrifice" is a name of a book that Lucille talks Toody into reading. The book is about an actor sacrificing himself so that his deserving partner can go on to better and better things. Toody thinks it is "fate" that got him to read the book, that it's really about him and Muldoon and that Toody is holding Muldoon back from big promotions that he ought to have.

In most "Car 54, Where Are You?" episodes, Toody (Joe E. Ross) is shown to be the real dummy of the cop pairing. Muldoon (Fred Gwynne) is the smart one.....so Toody tries to imitate what happened in the book to help his partner.....with near disastrous results.

Muldoon shows his insecurities, big-time and has to be outsmarted in the end by Guenther. Can you believe it? Wow, what a switch! I guess the two cops are made for each other, after all, regardless of who (supposedly) has the brains or the outside appearance of knowledge and confidence.
