Check and Mate

Ironically this episode ends a two year run with a guest star whose comedy show replaced Checkmate on the CBS schedule the following television season. Also the Beverly Hillbillies starring Buddy Ebsen lasted 7 seasons longer. So it was that "Jed Sills" and company was exchanged for "Jed Clampett" and family- Weeelllll Doggies!

An unlikely partnership
bkoganbing8 March 2016
The Checkmate series came to an end with this story about the unlikely singing duo of Buddy Ebsen and Paul Carr. Ebsen is a show business veteran who was a big name in the 30s and 40s and Carr was a one hit wonder rock and roller and record producer Ed Nelson teamed the two of them together as a singing duo. Now someone has assaulted Carr and the Checkmate team is brought in.

Because Carr doesn't want them they use frequent guest operative Jack Betts as a songwriter to get close to Carr.

Two thing were terribly wrong with this story. One was that I don't think anyone can believe that Ebsen and Carr would team as a permanent act. It would be like teaming Dick Haymes and Bobby Rydell as a singing duo. Secondly Paul Carr is such an unlikeable lout of a human being I think Ed Nelson would have decided that he wasn't worth the bother and moved on.

Sad that the Checkmate series which had some great guest stars and some interesting stories ended on such a downbeat episode about the record industry.
