Glynis Johns is the Mom
Hitchcoc7 August 2019
In order for Diane's mom to inherit money from the late father, Diane needs to be married. What follows is an effort to get Sam to marry her. He kindly agrees but then things begin to go haywire. It's not one of the better episodes. Famous actress Glynis Johns play the matriarch of the Chambers clan.

Someone Single, Someone Blue (#1.20)

Warning: Spoilers
One day Diane's mother arrives at the bar and tells her that in his will her dad said that if she doesn't get married within 10 years after his death the mother will lose all the money. And the last day is tomorrow. Sam agrees to marry Diane as a short business arrangement but they have a fight and it doesn't happen. But when Diane's mother thinks that she has lost all her wealth, her driver comes and proposes to her saying that he has stolen a lot of money from her husband during his work.

This is one of those episodes that I think are a bit outdated for our time, but it still brings some laughs. Here we have a "wedding" of Sam and Diane, which is very creative.

Only a matter of time...

Cheers winds down its first season with three S&D episodes. This one is a bit silly and uses the standard sitcom plot of a phony and/or abandoned wedding. Nevertheless, it shows that Sam and Diane getting together is inevitable.

It's fairly well known that Lucille Ball was considered to play Diane's mother, but passed as she was concerned she would overshadow the rest of the cast. Instead the producers cast Glynis Johns, best known for her supporting role in Mary Poppins. It was a good choice, as Johns matches Shelley Long in high strung eccentricity. Helen Chambers informs her daughter that if she's not married by midnight, Helen will lose her fortune. Sam reluctantly agrees to marry Diane on the condition that they can annul it soon after. However, both assume the other is taking the wedding more seriously than they are...

This is a cute episode that sets up the two part season finale, and Johns is funny as the pampered but sweet Mrs. Chambers, who gets her fairy tale ending, just not the one she planned on.
