Conan vs. the rubber ball
unbrokenmetal21 July 2014
Conan and his friends are going to Ahl Sohn-Bar. Hissah Zul remembers this town, because a terrible creature lives there which might become the end of Conan, he thinks. Now he wouldn't think so if he had actually seen it, looking like a big green rubber ball. Ridiculous special effects ruin this episode pretty much. Yet the script is fairly good: for example when Conan's men are surrounded by soldiers, there is no attack, a refreshing change from the usual brawls at first sight. Instead the general of Hissah Zul's army waits patiently for the best opportunity. Also noticeable is that the relationship of Hissah Zul and the talking skull becomes quite funny as the skull definitely has more sense of humor than his master.

One of Conan's companions, Vulkar, the fat guy with the huge ax, has left the series, and the actor Andrew Craig must have decided that so suddenly (or the character was 'axed', if you forgive the pun) that he doesn't even have a death scene. Otli mentions briefly that Vulkar went home to his people, and that was that. A replacement was quickly hired: T.J. Storm as Bayu joins Conan for further adventures. There must have been hardly time to adjust the finished scripts to that, because it is not explained why Bayu understands the sign language of Zzeben as well as Vulkar would.
