Roasting a famous historical figure certainly makes for an unusual one-time-only show, and our nation's first President was a fine choice. Dick Martin is about as good as he could be without Dan Rowan, mentioning why little George's father didn't punish him for chopping down the cherry tree: "he still had the hatchet in his hand!" Then famous for advertising healthy natural foods like 'wild hickory nuts,' Euell Gibbons also discusses the same incident, which apparently was committed by his own ancestor, John Quincy Gibbons, whose final words in his confession are: "I can't believe I ate the whole thing!" Audrey Meadows joins the dais as Martha Washington, discussing their honeymoon in Philadelphia: "they're right what they say, nothing ever happens in Philadelphia!" Singer Steve Lawrence does a fair Groucho impression, Corbett Monica brings up George's dental bill (especially the lumber), and Leonard Barr, Dean Martin's uncle, takes a shot at Lady Godiva. Foster Brooks, Henny Youngman, and Jack Carter do not disappoint, but Nipsey Russell steals the show with some commentary on Paul Revere. Actor Jan Leighton, famous for portraying over 3000 historical figures, closes the roast as George Washington, complete with powdered wig, admitting how he felt about the evening's festivities: "George Washington slept here!"
