THE DETECTIVES – Adopted - 1960

This one is episode 42 from the 97 episode run of, THE DETECTIVES. This series starred Robert Taylor and ran between 1959 and 1962. The first two seasons ran at a half hour and the last season had a runtime of an hour. The series followed the detective squad in a big city precinct. Cast regulars included, Mark Goddard, Russell Thorson, Tige Andrews, Lee Farr and Adam West. Robert Taylor headlines as Police Captain, Matt Holbrook.

Captain of Detectives, Robert Taylor gets a phone call from the husband, Eddie Ryder, of Taylor's former office aide, Patricia Breslin. Breslin had gotten married and quit to do the family thing. Ryder and Breslin had adopted a little girl. Taylor pays the couple a visit that evening.

Ryder spills that they are being told by the lawyer who handled the adoption, that the birth mother wants to reclaim the child. Ryder asks Taylor how they can fight this action. "Show the judge the paperwork showing the mother gave up all claims on the child. Ryder and Breslin never got any such documents from the lawyer. Ryder now admits that the lawyer said he can make the whole incident go away for $3,000 in cash.

Taylor does not like the smell of this, he tells the couple he will look into the matter. He has one of his detective's look up the birth mother through the hospital records. They discover that the child's mother, Jena Engstrom, is from a wealthy high society family. Taylor pays Engstrom a visit for a chat.

Taylor asks why Engstrom would be going after Ryder and Breslin for the $3,000. This is all news to Engstrom. She had given up the baby and wanted nothing further with it. Taylor now checks up on the lawyer involved. The man turns out to have been disbarred several years before. He was pulling these con jobs to keep himself in cash.

Needless to say, a less than friendly grip is applied to the swine. A few years in jail will sort him out. The couple keep the child and all are happy.

A rather soft episode from what is usually a hard edged series. The director, Ted Post, would become well known as the director of several Clint Eastwood films, HANG 'EM HIGH and MAGNUM FORCE.
