This one is episode 23 from the 97 episode run of, THE DETECTIVES. This series starred Robert Taylor and ran between 1959 and 1962. The first two seasons ran at a half hour and the last season had a runtime of an hour. The series followed the detective squad in a big city precinct. Cast regulars included, Mark Goddard, Russell Thorson, Tige Andrews, Lee Farr and Adam West. Robert Taylor headlines as Police Captain, Matt Holbrook.
Police Detective Russell Thorson gets a call from the wife, Linda Watkins, of a man, Robert Middleton, who he had jailed 20 years before. It seems Middleton had gotten out of jail and returned home to Watkins. First week back, several men had called and given Middleton a sound beating. Watkins asks if Thorson could look into the matter.
Thorson pays a visit to Middleton but gets no info. Thorson assumes that the visit was from members of the same mob Middleton had run with back in the day. The gang had pulled a large cash holdup for which Middleton had been sent up river. The cash from the robbery had never been recovered. Thorson figures that Middleton might know where the cash is, and that the other gang members want their cut.
Middleton still refuses to talk about the robbery, other than to say he has no idea where the cash went. Thorson makes the rounds of various old time racketeers looking for clues. A little forceful strong arm interviewing soon turns up a few names. Thorson does some further digging and gets the list down to, Robert Foulk, Hampton Frascher and Richard Reeves.
Middleton decides to come clean with the cops when another visit by Foulk etc sticks him in the hospital. The Police stake out Middleton's apartment and wait for the call by the gangster types. The villains show and grab up Middleton for another chat. The Detectives now rush in to grab the gang. Needless to say the nasty types refuse to come quietly. Weapons are pulled and used with all the "right" people being on the wrong end of the lead exchange.
Middleton tells the cops thanks, and promises to go straight for his wife's sake.
