Nazi's Blame Britain For the War
ygwerin16 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The German invasion of the Channel Islands commences, and the leaders of the occupation forces land by air in Guernsey.

A Committee had been organised to run the island during the occupation, and they meet the Germans in charge of the islands Administration.

The Chief German Administrator Major Richter is told that the British Government, has declared the island to be a demilitarised zone.

Major Richter tried to claim that this matter was not clearly enough stated, as the German officer responsible had no knowledge of it?

Major Richter further claimed, that the British Prime Minister had declared war on Germany. And that was why the Germans had to invade the island, he put the blame for everything at the door of the British Government.

Major Richter even tried to divert more blame from the Occupiers, by saying that the Demilitarised Notice could have been expressed via Neuteral Powers like Switzerland or the USA.

Two of the islanders decided to make the desperate effort to reach the British mainland by boat, mistakenly believing that this was the best chance of getting away.

By Order of the Fuhrer

The success of dramas such as Colditz and Secret Army on the BBC inspired ITV to make their own World War 2 drama.

The Channel Islands were the only part of the British Isles invaded by the Nazis in World War 2.

By 1978, it would be approaching almost 40 years to the invasion. Enough time would have lapsed but there would still be islanders who would had been around at that period.

The first episode sees Guernsey being demilitarised by the British knowing that the Germans are advancing.

The locals are fretting and fearful of an uncertain future. Dr Philip Martel (Bernard Horsfall) has been invited to a committee of the islanders who will liaise with the Nazis.

Major Richter (Alfred Burke) who has spent time in Britain will head the Nazi regime. He immediately lays down orders such as imposing a curfew.

Two of the locals decide to leave the island late at night in a boat, even though one of them had a chance to leave much earlier.

The dread that the islanders have is portrayed very well. There is a casualty by the end of the episode signifying that Nazis mean business.

There is very little to go on regarding the Nazi officers. Major Richter seems to be urbane and businesslike.

I guess given the period this was made. SS officer Hauptmann Reinicke (Simon Cadell) will likely to be a real nasty.
