Self-absorbed Hollywood actor Purvis Greene (Vic Morrow) has had a long stretch of bad publicity. No one questions any aspect of his acting ability or professionalism. But he hangs out with all manner of weirdos and is in relationships with multiple women concurrently.
The occasional legal indiscretion is in there too and his people occasionally have deliver the odd stuffed manila envelope to keep certain others from tattling on the naughty celebrity.
As an alternative to the bad press, Greene's producer Simon (Alfred Sandor) twists his arm to participate in a cutesy human interest story for infotainment consumption. A couple of super nice little old ladies (Enid Lorimer and Queenie Ashton) are big fans of his and own a large collection of memorabilia related to his life and work.
Greene agrees to visit them and be photographed with them as well as their collection. If he turns on the charm to please his two biggest fans and smiles for the camera he can be done with it in 45 minutes then return to all manner of off-set hedonism. If he enjoys it at all there is little evidence in his awkward cringing. But the photos taken suggest genuine flattery and joyful communion with the kindly old women.
After Simon and the press leave, Greene sticks around to autograph various items and enjoy a nice cup of tea with the elderly sisters before he goes. He discovers too late that they have drugged him and wakes up to find a long, elaborately staged nightmare waiting for him.
The Evil Touch was an Australian TV series in the vein of the Twilight Zone, the Outer Limits, Night Gallery et cetera. It only lasted a single season because many of 26 episodes were not as good as this one - a ghoulish tour de force with a brilliant cast.
American actor Vic Morrow did two episodes with this being the second. He was lured back by the offer of the chance to direct this entry. His direction of this offering emphasized style over substance and though there are genuinely eerie moments the notion of how elaborately a pair of geriatric lunatics have orchestrated it all is a bit much.
Nevertheless it is good fun to watch.
