Terrorism On U.S. Soil In The '70s
ccthemovieman-130 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
A lot of people (including me) forgot or didn't know that terrorism had hit United Soil back in the 1970s. Actually, it was a different kind because it involved two countries, neither one being the U.S., but both having citizens living here. It was Yugoslavia versus Croatia, or the Muslims vs. the Serbs. Animosity between the two groups rivals the hatred between the Arabs and Jews.

This hatred came to America in the early 70s and began with extortion letters to Croatian businessmen in Chicago. Then, there were two bomb threats in New York City, with bombs found at Grand Station Central Station and the United Nations. Then a murder took place in Pasadena, Cal., against a target man who wouldn't give in to the extortion.

From here are more plots, murders and bombs ranging from mail bombs to an attempt to blow up the Statue of Liberty! The latter was designed "to get the attention to our cause," that being Croatian independence. The group, as you can see, meant business. They were even willing blow up a big Yugoslavian dance event with 300 people attending.

Police finally figured out that group called "Otpor" was responsible for these criminal acts and the rest of the show explains how they captured and put away these people. It wasn't easy as a tight-knit group like that could not easily be susceptible to an informer.

The key to arresting these people was the use of "wiretapping." As one lawman put it, "wiretapping is essential now in the crime-fighting business. Sometimes it is the only way you can win."
