Hilarious children's program that might be more fun for adults
MissSimonetta5 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This initial episode of Shelley Duvall's excellent Faerie Tale Theatre television series is a comedic take on the old tale of The Frog Prince. Directed by Eric Idle and starring the late and great Robin Williams as the titular prince, it is one of the funniest episodes in the series as a whole.

The entire cast is top notch, with Williams being the stand-out. Though the costumes and sets are proudly low-budget, and the effects recall the 1933 King Kong, there is a simple charm to it all that one rarely finds with children's programming these days. The writing is wickedly funny, with great lines and gags that almost never fall flat.

What floored me was how raunchy the content got. FTT is famous for its use of innuendo, but the amount of sexual humor in this went off the charts. I am genuinely surprised they got away with things such as the newly transformed frog prince nude in the princess' bed or the king quickly marrying the two off "for moral reasons." Best of all is when the frog requests to sleep in the princess' bed and she states that she refuses to be "shacked up with a frog!"

I cannot think of a better way to start off this magnificent series.

Very good start to the 'Faerie Tale Theatre' series
TheLittleSongbird12 June 2017
There is a lot to like about the 'Faerie Tale Theatre' series. Many of their adaptations of various well-known and well-loved fairy tales are charming, clever and sometimes funny. 'Faerie Tale Theatre' puts its own magical spin on the best of the episodes while still capturing the essence of the stories.

Although 'The Frog Prince' is a nice enough story, there was the worry as to whether there was enough content considering the story is also a pretty slight one to sustain just under an hour's episode when as evidenced in Cannon's decent but flawed version it would struggle to lend itself well to a feature film.

No need to worry though. Although not among the best of the series, "The Tale of the Frog Prince" is not the worst either and is actually one of the series' most entertaining, also one of its funniest. Adjectives that you would usually not put in the same sentence with this particular story. True, the storytelling is slight even for the running time, though that is the fault of the original story itself. Thought the sets were colourful (if not lavish) and the photography lovely, but the costumes are clearly low-budget and pretty amateurish-looking.

"The Tale of the Frog Prince" is well scored and irreverently directed by none other than Eric Idle, who is certainly a long way from a slouch when it comes to comedy and fun. Considering the tone of the episode, Idle couldn't have been a more perfect choice for director.

Loved the dialogue here. It is agreed that it is very racy for the time and you are indeed amazed at how much it gets away with, but that is a huge part of the fun and charm. A lot of the dialogue is absolutely hilarious. While slight the story is charming enough.

Performances are just fine. The standout is Robin Williams, who is an absolute joy as the titular character. Shelley Duval is an inviting host and Teri Carr does bring charm to her spoilt character, was worried she would be very unlikeable but she wasn't thankfully. Watch out for Rene Auberjonois as well. No dubious or strange casting here.

Overall, very good start and well worth the watch. 8/10 Bethany Cox

An eccentric take on the old classic
WWmoviejunkie19 November 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I remember Teri Garr as the princess , asking why she would want to marry a ( dragon - slaying ) prince when she was already a princess .

She thought it made more sense to marry a king , so that she could be queen 😂 ... logical , spoilt & angling for a promotion ... My parents loved the episode . ( I hadn't developed a taste for satire & questionable humour in the in the '90's ... )

Creative spoof with terrific casting
lor_4 February 2023
My review was written in February 1984 after watching a CBS/Fox video cassette.

This is Monty Pythonite Eric Idle's hilarious "The Tale of the Frog Prince", a droll spoof of traditonal storytelling that features very convincing miniaturization effects using Ulimatte and effects by Knott Ltd.

Amidst very effective wordplay by writer-director-narrator Idle, Robin Williams excells in heavy makeup as the froggie, even launching into a night club act when he entertains at the king's party. Using an arch manner reminicent of early 1930s Katharine Hepburn or Bette Davis, co-star Teri Garr is a treat as the haughty princess whose contrariness extends to her favoring a "Save the Dragons" campaign. Rene Auberjonois, Candy Clark, Roberta Maxwell and Donovan Scott are solid in support.

The Funniest Faerie Tale Episode
rachelrachel-3343130 December 2021
When you team up Robin Williams, Terri Garr, and Eric Idle, you'd hope you'd at least get a few chuckles and this adaptation of the Grimm fairy tale, The Frog Prince, is not only side-splittingly funny at times, but it's also one of the best episodes of Faerie Tale Theatre. They do a great job of expanding a very short story into an incredibly entertaining hour.
