FOLLOW THE SUN – The Woman Who Never Was - 1961

This is the 5th episode from the 1961-62 series, FOLLOW THE SUN. The series, which ran for 30 episodes, follows a trio of free-lance magazine writers. The three are played by Barry Coe, Gary Lockwood and Brett Halsey. The gimmick here is that they are based in Honolulu. Also with recurring roles are Gigi Perreau as their secretary, and Jay Lanin as their contact with the local Police. Of course the three newsmen are always getting involved with the usual assortment of nasty types.

Reporter Brett Halsey pays a late night visit to currency dealer, Paul Langton. He wants to do a story on the man. Langton shows him the door and says "No thanks". Several minutes later a man wearing a mask enters Langton's office with a gun. The man robs Langton's safe and gives him a severe pistol whipping which proves fatal.

Reporter Halsey is gobbled up by the Police as the most likely suspect. The case is tossed due to a lack of evidence. Langton's wife, Bethel Leslie accuses Halsey of getting away with murder. She heads back to San Francisco.

Several weeks later a gorgeous looking blonde gets off the jet from the mainland. She arranges a meeting with reporter Halsey about a big story. She hints at there being a big mob story if he is interested. He is, and he is also interested is the cute blonde with the southern drawl. What he fails to notice is that said blonde is really Mrs. Langton, Bethel Leslie. She has a blonde wig, different colour contact lenses and different teeth.

Leslie is back in town to get even with the man she believes killed her husband. For several days she has Halsey come over to her suite as she gives him a cock and bull story about the mob blackmailing people. She also makes sure that Halsey is seen by Leslie's new neighbour, Dyan Cannon. (And what a looker at only 24 is Miss Cannon) Leslie soon has her plan going like clockwork. She has Halsey cash a large check because she needs some cash etc. She then fakes a phone call from Chicago calling her home on family emergency. Off she goes after telling Miss Cannon she has grown frightened of being around Mister Halsey. Next thing you know Halsey has been arrested again and charged with killing the blonde.

Leslie has really set up Halsey for a long fall. Witness step up saying telling how he was always at her apartment. Miss Cannon says her bit and the Police find all the chemicals needed to dissolve a body in a handy spot.

It is only a bit of good luck and a slip up by Miss Leslie that saves Halsey from a long fall with a short piece of rope.

A much better episode than my write-up would suggest. The director was big screen veteran, Felix E. Feist. Feist is well known to film-noir fans as the director of, THE DEVIL THUMBS A RIDE, THE THREAT, THE MAN WHO CHEATED HIMSELF, THIS WOMAN IS DANGEROUS and TOMORROW IS ANOTHER DAY.
