Worth seeing even if the story is a bit odd...
planktonrules18 October 2010
This is from "Four Star Playhouse"--a show that consisted of four top Hollywood stars who alternated who starred in each teleplay--the other three got that particular week off from the show. Actually, there were five stars, Ida Lupino and Joan Fontaine and Merle Oberon ended up switching roles in the show as the fourth star. The other three were David Niven, Charles Boyer and Dick Powell--some really disparate actors who seemed to have little in common.

This particular episode stars Charles Boyer--an incredibly suave and talented actor. However, the plot seemed really, really weird....after all, it's just about the game of Bridge. Boyer plays a world-famous Bridge player who has come to town for a tournament. An ex-lover of his contacts him--trying to get Boyer to deliberately throw the game so her lover can win and gain self-respect. You also find out that the husband's boss has promised him a big promotion if he wins!! This just seems weird and I can't imagine any job offering this...unless the job is writing a Bridge column or representing a playing cards company!! Weird.

As to whether or not Boyer will help her, this is uncertain during much of the show. However, what IS certain is that Boyer is bitter at having lost the lady to her idiot husband--and he'd love to get revenge or get her back--even after all these years. The resolution was very entertaining and interesting...though, as I said, the story itself was strange because a simple game of Bridge took on epic proportions! Heck, James Bond's Bridge games seemed less epic! Interesting and well-acted--this one is worth seeing.

The Bridge Over Vera
bkoganbing3 July 2010
This thirty minute Four Star Playhouse teleplay, A Championship Affair casts Charles Boyer as a world renowned visiting bridge champion in Seattle for a tournament. That's not all he's there for, he'd like to take things up with Vera Miles an old flame who is married now to the local reigning bridge champion Ross Elliott.

Boyer is a crafty psychological devil who'd like to humiliate Elliott as well as steal Vera from him. He's also obsessed with winning at all costs, even in contact bridge Boyer is a firm believer in Leo Durocher's adage about nice guys finishing last.

The story is a nice and finally tuned psychological thriller with the men playing psychological games with their minds. Elliott is way outclassed by Boyer in this, but does get his innings in.

A very nice television ensemble drama from the golden age of such.

A Challenging Entry

Building a TV plot around a game of Bridge is chancey at best. Still, 4-Star pulls it off, as we wonder whether Bridge champ Boyer will throw the card tournament to please his ex-sweetie Miles who's now married to Boyer's card-playing rival Elliott. After all, the Elliott-Miles marriage is shaky since hubby can't seem to succeed at anything, unlike the smugly successful Boyer. Still, Miles dumped the champ anyway for the beleaguered Elliott. So, if Miles can just convince Boyer to lose the tournament to her hubby, then his self-confidence could be restored and their marriage solidified. Trouble is Boyer still loves her, thus giving him reason not to lose and maybe win her back. Then too, maybe underneath it all, she still loves Boyer. So, with all these tangled threads, what will the outcome be, and more importantly, why.

Good thing the acting's first-rate, particularly Boyer's crafty smugness, which keeps us guessing what's really going on inside that rigid exterior. And that's along with little gems of thoughtful dialogue, especially from the cerebral Boyer. All in all, the half-hour's another thoughtful entry in that superior 1950's series. So catch it if you can.
