A very nasty business indeed

It's an unusual feature of this detective series, fronted by the always likeable John Gregson as Chief Superintendent Gideon, that individual episodes, vary so much in tone. One episode starring Eric Barker reflected the latter's trademark gentle humour

This episode however, deftly directed by Leslie Norman (father of the late Barry) is uncompromisingly nasty, dealing with high level crookery in a largish construction company. Excellent cast including a brace of Hustons, Victor Madden and Gordon Gostelow. I remember the latter as an amusing character actor. Here he displays considerable versatility to an almost terrifying extent. The final scene in the hospital gripping. Corruption in the construction industry was a popular theme in the 1950s (Hell Drivers) and 1960s crime dramas, perhaps fictionalised exposes of true stories,. Not though in recent decades for some reason.

Gideons Way has been a really excellent find by Talking Pictures TV - consistently good, sometime as in this case, impressive.

Clever use of scenarios

Both Michael Erickson, and George Gideon's son Matthew have scenes involving record players

The Wolseley 6/110 Police cars always feature heavily, however this is the first car chase featuring two units, stopping the speeding Jaguar 3.8

The two villains were driving a Ford Zephyr Mk 3, with the 4 cylinder 1703cc engine

Janet Davies (Dad's Army's Mrs Pike) is sadly uncredited as the Hospital nurse

An intensely gritty episode.

Gideon looks into the two year old death of a Clerk at a construction site, the co owner does all he can to cover things up, and bribe another clerk, one that knows too much.

Truly this is another high quality episode from this excellent series. Your attention is very quickly grabbed by that very nasty scene involving Michael Robbins and a kettle of hot water, that was a very bleak moment indeed.

I loved how gritty it was, is it just me, or does this whole show seem to be morphing into something a bit heavier, a bit tougher as it progresses. The villains here, were pretty nasty, you wouldn't want to cross any of them.

The fight scenes looked great, they were pretty realistic looking. One brief moment of humour, where Gideon sees Matthew dancing with his latest flame.

Great acting, terrific cast, Victor Maddern, Glyn Houston and Michael Robbins were all excellent.

Hopefully the rest of the series is along these lines.

8/10.

Fall High Fall Hard

A criminal case is derailed when a henchman damages a key witness with some boiling water.

The henchman was employed by Charles Randle, co owner of a successful construction company.

It has been successful because since Randle came on board, it has cut corners.

The trial collapses and the police know that the injured witness was also nobbled.

When Tony Ericson, the other owner finds out what has been happening to his family firm, he goes haywire and confronts Randle.

The henchman comes out to play once more.

Directed by Leslie Norman. This is a muscular, gritty episode. It gives an indication of just how rough criminals can be. The staged truck crash was odd, it really twisted and turned.

Victor Maddern is rather posh in this one as Randle.
