Have Yourself a Very Little Christmas (#5.12)
ComedyFan201014 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
It is a hot Christmas and girls don't want to shop much so they just draw each others names of a hat and buy one present. After exchanging gifts they go to volunteer at a homeless shelter. And they meet Stan there because his wife threw him out, Dorothy tries to motivate him and it is successful.

I like the gifts part. Was very funny how they were dreading who will get Rose's gift, although she ended up doing well, and it had a lot of funny lines.

The shelter part was good to remind people of people who need help. I was just irritated by the constant "especially children". As if children are the ones who everyone should care about the most. People already do that, most help children over really suffering people.

Christmas with the girls...and Stan.

Warning: Spoilers
Thankful for their friendship and having more to give than just gifts to give, the four women volunteer at a church food shelter where a depressed Stan shows up to share his latest marital issues. The episode starts off with an exhausted Dorothy returning home from shopping and suggesting that they pick names rather than buy for everybody. Everybody is concerned that they will get Rose, but she surprises the winner with a surprise gift that doesn't involve yodeling. It's a very nice episode that shows how caring people can make a difference for strangers less fortunate but also leaves a message about how society really should do more the rest of the year.

Classic TV Xmas Countdown Episode #62
kgraovac20 December 2023
The girls draw names to see who will buy for whom and all dread having their name picked by Rose. Later, they all serve dinner to the needy at Rose's church where Stan appears among the crowd.

Dorothy states she had to assault another shopper to get a coveted Batman hat - a popular franchise back in 1989 due to the movie. Sophia refers to Stan as "The Yutz of Xmas Past" and reveals the gift she sent to son Phil was from the Victoria's Secret catalog. The funniest part is Blanche's reaction during the name-picking scene when she realizes it's herself who will be getting one of Rose's dreaded homemade gifts.

The jokes are not as funny as in the excellent Season 2 Xmas episode and when we get to the dinner sequence, a lot of the lines sound like a Public Service Announcement.

Reverend Avery is played by Matt McCoy (WE GOT IT MADE, THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE).

Not up to par for THE GOLDEN GIRLS. 6/10.
