Practical Joke
sambase-3877331 December 2021
It takes a sick mind to want to introduce a guy like Gomer Pyle to a female burlesque performer and tell him she's a "school teacher". Well, apparently Sgt. Hacker and his corporal have sick minds. They pitch the idea to the lady and she tells them immediately that she doesn't "dig" practical jokes. And then she says she'll do it on one condition: if they pay her "fifty bucks". Turns out the lady is a business woman. Good for her. Get some money out of these two creeps. They agree to it.

So they introduce her to Gomer and they tell him that she's a cousin and is visiting from Seattle. And that's she's a school teacher. Hacker says she needs an escort for the evening and Gomer agrees to do the job and takes her to a tearjerker movie about a dog. Then they go have an ice cream soda. It's clear that the burlesque queen is having a lousy time, but Gomer seems oblivious. He's happy as a clam.

Gradually Gomer begins to work his magic on her and she realizes that she lost the little girl in her a long time ago. I won't spoil the ending, but lets just say that things go a little differently than Hacker expected.

Fay Spain gives a good realistic performance in this episode. She doesn't clown it up and go for big laughs, she plays her character like a real person. And that's really the best part of the episode. BTW, there is no Sgt. Carter in this episode. There aren't as many laughs as normal in this episode, but there are some very nice moments between Gomer and Lila. I gave it a 7 because of that.

Very sweet episode

Warning: Spoilers
After Gomer gives money to a panhandler who asked for a quarter for a bowl of soup, Gomer is mocked by Sgt. Hacker and his corporal for being too kind and trusting. So they decide to play a little joke on him by setting him up with a burlesque dancer, telling him that she is from out of town and a school teacher. The plan was to humiliate Gomer by luring him to her real place of employment, so he can find out what she really does for a living. She does not want to play along at first, but agrees if they'll pay her fifty bucks.

So Gomer, being the nice guy that he is, agrees to take the woman, whose name is Lila, out. He takes out out to do some wholesome activities, and at first, she is bored. However, Lila soon finds herself charmed by Gomer, as he, as usual, acts like a gentleman and treats her with respect. Given what she does for a living, I guess a lot of guys treat her like trash. Hacker and his buddy certainly did in using her as they did.

So when Gomer is lured to the burlesque joint, he is stunned to learn the truth about Lila, yet he chooses to accept her for who she is. Hacker pays her the promised $50, but she gives it back She found that she truly enjoyed her time with Gomer, and did not want to be part of the stupid joke any longer.

I was a little surprised that they would show Gomer dating another woman at this point in the series, because I thought he was going steady with Lou-Ann Poovie. She was not in this episode. Neither was Sgt. Carter, which was odd. I think this might be the only episode that he wasn't in.

This episode was not as big on the laughs as others, but high on the sweetness scale, so I give it an 8.

Allan Melvin Must Have Been A Very Rich Man
richard.fuller114 December 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Before he was forever typecast as Sam the butcher on The Brady Bunch, Melvin did cartoon voices, yes, but played endless cops to robbers (to negative-types) on Andy Griffith and other shows, and likewise turned up in this episode of Gomer Pyle, essentially playing the same type.

The deal was to be a rough sergeant who sets Gomer up with a burlesque dancer by telling him she was a schoolteacher, AS A JOKE! Now let's all get ready for a good laugh! Of course, Gomer treats her 'like a real woman', she is flattered and doesn't follow thru with 'the gag'.

But the moment in the night club when Gomer is supposed to realize she is really a dancer, Melvin and his co-hort, Jensen, is it, look at Gomer peculiarly puzzled.

It's Jensen who really summarizes everything up perfectly, "why aren't we laughing?" Fortunately or unfortunately, Melvin is so over the top in these parts, it's all brushed off, but today, this would be our good old beloved 'bullying'.

Yet it is truly strange for such a minor, sidekick character like Jensen to conclude where everything stands in this rather silly episode.

I don't regard it as awful simply because of Jensen.
