So I'm rewatching the entire series for Season 19. I do believe I stopped watching years ago around Season 13 or 14 - and picked it back up once I saw that Harry Shum Jr. Was joining the Season 19 cast. It's been a ride - those last several seasons. And now as I prepare for Season 19 to drop in a few days I wanted to start over from the beginning and let me say... it's a mind you know what seeing these actors in 2005. They are BABIES. So sweet and innocent looking and it's crazy seeing them since I know what is to come. Izzie and George are still my favorite characters - high quality writing - great stories - I'm unsure if Shonda still writes episodes in the newer seasons but she should - she was amazing at it.

This is a fantastic show and I'm glad to be able to restart it.

Good, but far from great

E.R., House, Nip/Tuck... Seriously, was there any real need of another hospital drama? Probably not. Does that mean Grey's Anatomy is a load of rubbish? Certainly not. It just isn't as good as the aforementioned serials.

The main problem seems to be the fact that when you name a show after the leading character, said person should be a little out of the ordinary. Exhibit A: Buffy (and its spin-off Angel), Huff and, again, House - three programs featuring edgy, scarred protagonists who would like to make a difference but struggle to accept themselves. What does Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) have that makes her so special? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. In fact, the Seattle Grace Hospital intern who got in because of her famous mother (Kate Burton) is the least interesting character of the first episode, and that's something that stuck for the rest of the inaugural season.

Not that the concept itself is bad: having Meredith endure a 48-hour shift on her first day at work and then realize her boss, Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), is actually the man she slept with the night before is a fun idea, if used the right way. Unfortunately, the right way is not blasting the viewer's ears with pseudo-philosophical reflections, told in a never-ending voice-over that is more often than not annoying: sure, it worked for Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City or, staying in the medical field, Zach Braff in Scrubs, but those shows are funny and original - Grey's Anatomy, on the other hand, sets out to satirize the clichés of the genre, and succeeds admirably: the gallery of supporting characters is amazing, from the hard-working overachiever (Sandra Oh, the cast's standout) to the anxious momma's boy (T.R. Knight) via the strict supervisors (Isaiah Washington and Chandra Wilson). Shame creator Shonda Rhimes sacrifices their screen-time in favor of Meredith's pointless musings.

And yet I like the show. How come? Well, the writing gets sharper in later seasons, and so does the narrative impact of the surgical procedures (whereas Season One is a soap opera, with less operating tables and more sex); the supporting cast is perfect (Oh and Dempsey especially); and despite the overall uninspired narration the series never gets boring, courtesy of a pace that leaves no room for dead air.

In short: a polished, if rather shallow opening episode. It ain't E.R., but hey, no one ever said it had to be.

The First Episode...

Warning: Spoilers
I love this episode. I think it's a great Series Premiere, a great start to a wonderful show.

In this episode, Meredith Grey, the daughter of the famous surgeon, Ellie Grey, begins her residency at Seattle Grace Hospital. She's starting her intern year, and is hoping to do very well. She starts her day by kicking out a guy she randomly hooked up with the night before, Derek. But later when she gets her work assignments from her resident, Dr. Bailey, she realizes that Derek is actually one of her attendings, being the Head of Neurology. Which she is very shocked to find out. Her other interns aren't all as nice as she is, one is very perky, one is very competitive, and one is goofy and one is an ass. She and her fellow interns race to finish their first forty-eight hour shift, and solve the case of a mystery illness before the patient dies.

Fun Fact: Every episode is named after a song, this episode's song is by The Beatles.

Overall, I give this episode a 10 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Freaking Ridonkulous.

I think this pilot is perfect. You get a sense of what every character is like, and you want to know them more. I remember when I saw this for the first time years ago, I really wanted to be them, especially Meredith. Their lives looks so interesting. Also, the music in this episode is fantastic. When they use these song later on in the show, I get chills. Ellen Pompeo is so good at acting without saying or doing much, just her energy.

Great pilot episode. Lots of twists and turns.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode holds a lot of re-watch value. Not only does it reveal a lot, but still leave a lot of room for watchers to come back for more. This pilot episode starts with Derek and Meredith after their one-night stand. Then later on shows the intense atmosphere for surgical interns in their first day at Seattle Grace Hospital. Characters such as Christina, George, Izzie, and Alex are also introduced during this episode.

Throughout this episode, there were very good hospital cases dealt with that challenged the interns, residents, and attendings that made this episode feel like a roller coaster.

Twists such as Derek being Meredith's boss in the hospital; Ellis Grey, Meredith's mother, the legendary surgeon revealed to have Alzheimer's disease... gave a nice pull factor during the first episode of a series.
