Dillon Don't Like Gamblers or Shot At
jamdifo14 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The best part of this episode is Pat Conway as the gun for hire Toque Morlan. Even his name sounds cool. He plays one of the best gun for hires Dillon had to face. Lots of tension too leading up to the gunfight with the 2 being former friends. He was a worthy opponent and Dillon's 70th confirmed kill.

I also liked the exchange between Dillon and Philip Abbott as Ben Corder. Dillon makes it clear, he don't like gamblers. He also warned him he made one mistake trying to bribe him, make another and he's out of town. Well, he did, he shot at Dillon to scare him. What was he thinking? Dillon also appropriately kicks his butt.

James Westerfield, famous character actor and voice, plays the other gambler Harry Duggan. He doesn't do much except relay to Ben corder how stupid he his. And then there's Charles Devin in the small role as Pete, who gets killed by Torque. Its one of 3 roles for him in his career. I bet that scene was always the talk of the day at his family reunions.

Deja Vu
darbski4 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Why, yes, we all HAVE been here before. The part that I liked was that anytime there are two dirtbag gamblers talking about not bein' the one who got shot, and also the first thing they do is start slammin' down rotgut in their hotel room; before they try to buy Matt off, It's a good bet that they're gonna wind up dead. Instead, a twist of fate decides it differently. Real unfortunate that the wrong guys lived.

Sheriff Battle
junemo19 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
What's interesting about this episode is that Pat Conway, who plays Toque, is most known as playing Sheriff Clay Hollister in Tombstone Territory. So in essence, it's a battle of two actors whose most famous roles were playing Sheriffs. Or lawmen, since Matt was a US Marshall. I agree with other posts that there's not much warmth between Matt and Toque as friends, but that's likely because there's a misunderstanding about a past incident. Kitty tries to help by telling Toque where Matt is coming from. Matt doesn't want to kill his friend, and Toque doesn't really want to kill Matt. Still, a chance encounter at the end, however, disastrously impacts them both.

An Average Gunsmoke, which Is Still Better Than Most
dougdoepke13 September 2011
Average episode with at least one special feature. Two crooked gamblers try to bribe Matt. Instead, he runs them out of town. Angered, the gamblers hire gunman Toque (Conway) to take out the troublesome marshal. What they don't know is that the gunman and Matt are old friends, that is, before Toque developed a hatred for lawmen. So what will happen now.

I like the way a chance happening on the street alters the outcome. That seems more like real life where random events sometimes count heavily. Such imaginative details typify many of the early entries and help distinguish the series from its many competitors of that day.

Conway certainly looks the part in his flat black hat and moody demeanor; at the same time, the gamblers are appropriately obnoxious. However, I wasn't as affected by the climax as circumstances would, I think, warrant. I suspect it's because there doesn't seem much warmth between the two old friends, thus diminishing the impact.

It was hard to comprehend that the two were old friends.
kfo949421 July 2013
This episode begins when two shady characters, Ben Corden and Harry Duggan, comes into Dodge to set up a gambling table and want to bribe Marshal Dillon into looking the other way. Needless to say it is not long before Marshal Dillon throws the two out-of-town but they vow to return.

Sometime later, the two are at the Lady Gay and have hired a gunman, Toque Morlan, to intimidate Matt into leaving town. But it turns out that Matt and Toque use to be friends. However Torque has disdain for lawmen from a matter that happened in Silver City when he knew Matt. So now he cares not for the law and wants Matt to either leave town or there will be a gunfight.

The only real problem was that for old friends it did not seemed that Matt and Toque were even on talking terms. Perhaps if they had made the two friends emotion more warm then the story would have more interest. It was not like friends seeing each other but long time enemies. Anyway the story did keep the viewers mildly interested enough to keep watching but it seemed like the story never really gelled. Nice watch.

Marshal Dillon Gets A Tempting Bribe
StrictlyConfidential15 November 2020
Ben Corder and Harry Duggan are a couple of professional gamblers who are operating at the Long Branch saloon where they proceed to play a crooked game.

When they are found out they attempt to bribe Marshal Dillon for protection. But Dillon won't have any part of their crooked dealings and, with that, gives them 24 hours to clear out of Dodge.

In the meantime Corder hires ace gunslinger, Toque Morlan to threaten Dillon in hopes of getting him to cooperate with them.

Anyway - It looks like it's gonna be a serious showdown between the marshal and the ornery culprits.
