In season one, Danny shot and killed a guy. While it was unintentional, the guy had fired at good old Danno first. But, because they weren't able to prove his story at first, it looked as if he might be prosecuted for this shooting. Now, here in season five, Danny is once again in trouble for a shooting that appears to have been a mistake.
Before the shooting occurs, you see Danny and a cop friend out bowling. However, on his way out, his friend sees a guy driving erratically and even though he's off duty, he's obliged to give chase. However, unexpectedly, the guy behind the wheel shoots the cop. Danny is upset not just because this is a friend, but he's the same cop that saved Danny a year earlier. When he dies in the hospital, Danny takes it hard. But, it gets harder when the punk who did it is thrilled that the cop died! After talking with the newly widowed wife, Danny goes out for a drink with Ben--after all, he's off duty and needs to unwind. But there's a loudmouth in the bar and Danny nearly tears his head off, so Ben takes Danny out of the place. Clearly, Danny is on edge.
Because of this context, what happens next looks bad for old Danny boy. A guy robs a pharmacy nearby and Danny witnesses the guy taking off--so he gives chase. He's not sure if the car he's chasing is the guy, but eventually Danny catches up and orders the guy to freeze. At that moment, in the darkness, it appears as if the guy is about to fire Danny first first--too bad it turned out he did have a gun!! This is a nice change of pace even though it is a lot like the previous episode. Still, the acting was pretty good and I really loved seeing Ben tackle the bad guy at the end! Interesting, well written and emotionally charged.
