The final Vashon episode...
planktonrules29 November 2011
Warning: Spoilers
A few seasons back, "Hawaii Five-O" ran three episodes concerning a mob family--the Vashons. In the first, the punk grandson commits crimes for thrills and taunts the police into catching him. Ultimately, he's killed by McGarrett in self-defense while committing one of the robberies. In the next, the young man's father (Harold Gould) tries an destroy McGarrett in revenge--and in the end it's this man, Henri Vashon, that goes to prison. In the third, Henri's father takes his stab at McGarrett and when his interesting plan fails, he commits suicide. Now, three seasons later, Henri appears for one final stab at McGarrett.

The show begins with McGarrett taking a special trip out to the state prison to speak at Henri Vashon's parole hearing. Due to McGarrett's efforts, Vashon is denied parole--and he's determined to get his revenge...again. He orchestrates a kidnapping of a group of dignitaries who are visiting the prison--all to try to lure McGarrett into a bizarre trap. But, unfortunately for the other members of the kidnapping team, they don't realize that Vashon has no intention of escaping--just killing McGarrett.

If you suspend disbelief, this is a very good episode--but not as good as the previous Vashon episodes. Most of this is because it is hard to believe and because Vashon's character is a bit one-dimensional. Still, it is quite interesting and worth seeing.

Solid Episode

Definitely a solid late episode in the series, with some tense scenes and great acting by its leads.

Someone mentioned in their review that this was dull, which is hard to understand, considering, there are many episodes in the upcoming seasons that definitely relate to being 'dull'. This episode, once again, shows the comradery between the 5-O team and in particular, Dan's continued loyalty to McGarrett.

This is a nice follow-up to the 'Vashon Trilogy' from season 5 and true fans won't be disappointed.

An Average Ending to a Great Story Arc
RedbirdCraig4 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I loved the Vashon trilogy that took place in season 5. This is a solid episode but it's not quite at the quality of the earlier entries.

Without giving away too much, the point of this is that the remaining Vashon, Honore, gets his paroled scotched by McGarrett and takes the opportunity for revenge by putting him on "trial" for his son's "murder" using a hastily-arranged escape plan as cover to get Steve in the room. As you might guess, it doesn't end well for Honore.

It's not a bad episode, as Harold Gould is as solid as can be as a TV character actor. However, the plot has some areas that strain credulity. For instance, this escape/revenge plot seems to get put together in about a day or two, quite an undertaking even for someone with Vashon's juice. Also, Honore always seemed to be the rational one but this whole plot seemed to be irrational. His main thing is to be paroled but when McGarrett puts the kibosh on it Vashon pivots toward a plan that at best puts him in the can for the rest of his life. It just seemed against the character's previous thought process.

Gripping, Dramatic

As always, Harold Gould is excellent.

This episode, has about 4 minutes of footage, from the Vashon trilogy episodes of season 5.

Stellar acting, and police work.

I think they missed a good chance
VetteRanger23 May 2023
This would have been a ten except for two things:

One, and they had to do it in the day, it seems like 10 to 15 minutes of the episode was taken up by recapping the crimes of Vashon's son and what led to the exchanged shots where McGarrett shot him. When this aired, it had been a few seasons since the Vashon trilogy, so they had to do it. To a recent viewer who's regularly watching Hawaii 5-0 in syndication or streaming, it's not that long since we saw those episodes.

Next, the "Case against McGarrett" doesn't really last that long and is mostly Vashon's grief, denial, and anger raging against McGarrett, rather than the real "trial" the episode seemed to set up in title and premise. It would have been more interesting if they'd let the trial play out and the inmates voted to acquit. :-)

So the show is entertaining as aired ... the writers just missed a chance to make it unique and special.

Dull
hmoika19 October 2019
The last time I saw this episode, I thought it was rather gripping, as another reviewer described.

But I saw it again last night, and ohhhhh was it dull.

First off, it begins with a recap of a previous episode.....and seemed to go on forever. I understand why they did that, but it bored me to tears. Then, when the episode itself started to take off I was intrigued. but.......

.......The long scene in the prison was just too much to take. It was way too unbelievable that "Mister Vashon" would be that oblivious. I can understand a con being obsessed with a grudge, but this was ridiculous.

By the eighth season, this wonderful show was showing signs of weariness.
