This was one hell of a way to start a season, this happened at a time when killing characters especially main ones was still uncommon. But all the same whenever I watch it it still gets me.
Herc and Ioliaus they go off to Egypt to help Gigamesh and his people. This I thought was really cool because I really love Egyptian mythology, it's my second favorite kind. Tony Todd an actor I really like is solid as Gigamesh whom in Egyptology is their version of Hercules.
When you first meet Gigamesh he seems like a good guy that you could be friends with. And of course we find out he's the big brother of Gina Torres character (sorry forgot name) which I thought was interesting actually giving her some depth.
Liked seeing both Gigamesh and Herc work together getting though pretty much an Indiana Jones like obstacle course to get to the Nectar of Life, which will supposedly help the land. But then of course something happens which I'll admit I didn't see coming, it just came completely out of left field when we see Gigamesh betray Hercules and take the nectar for himself.
I really like the voice that Tony Todd used for Gigamish's turn, Tony really can voice act. Which was almost the same kind of audio voice from the film "Candyman" it was menacing and inhuman which I'll admit like in that movie gave me chills.
The theme in this episode is of course about Faith. There is a contrast parallel between both Hercules and Gigamish. Both of them lost their family however we see both have gone on different pathways. Gigamish has chosen a path of faithlessness, a path of the unrighteous as Herc put it he choose an easy way out for his pain, instead of facing it all he did was retreat to fill his loss with the pursuit of greed, wrath, and vanity. But those three things never equal love and are no one's companions.
Herc chose the path of faith and righteousness, because despite his loss he knew he had to go on because there were many other that were in just as much pain as him and he decided to help them out which made the pain less of a burden. Though this he has became strong spiritually and thorough the journey he has always had friends and family to help him out in return but most importantly return the friendship and love he shares with them. This has helped him also keep the memory of his family strong in his heart, even though he can't see them they are always with them in his soul.
Really like the final battle with Hercules against Gigamesh basically two famous demigods from two different mythologies. In a way it's kinda a fanfare battle on not just that count but on another as it's also kinda Hercules versus Candyman which makes it even cooler. Really like those red eyes from Gigamesh which are just chilling as they are devil red, it just shows how truly far Gigamesh has fallen and that he is no longer the man he once was, that man is truly gone. The only bad thing about the episode was the one on one wasn't long enough, I felt like there could of been a bit more to that fight like may'be seeing both Gigamesh and Herc engage in a knife fight but due to the limited episode time left it couldn't happen so oh well.
But then it gets at a moment which I'll admit was both tragic and shocking when we see Gigamesh use his Scanner power and throws the dagger with his mind toward his sister. Gina Torres character sees the dagger but is a split second too late to dodge, however we then see Ioliaus take the dagger for her as he dives in it's pathway. I'll admit seeing that really made my heart wrench, granted the character as died a couple of times before but this was much different because this time there was no resurrection card to play.
Seeing that of course makes Herc's emotion as hot as the hellish sky and mine as well. Herc then delivers each and every blow hard which damages Gigamesh severely as he futilely retaliates and seems to lose strength with each blow, as each blow is powered for Herc's love for Ioliaus.
We see in that final fight as Herc is about to deliver the final blow, Gigamesh cries out to Dayhawk for help. But Dayhawk has abandoned him because he helps no one but himself and of course Herc with all his strength boots Gigamesh to Hell. That moment just goes to show Herc is strong because he kept his faith no matter how hard things get, while Gigamesh in the end became weak because he had no real faith to latch onto to feed him strength physically and spiritually.
The final minutes are just heart breaking as we see Herc spend the last moment with Ioliaus, Ioliaus smiles and says something nice to Herc for his final words. Ioliaus then passes away which I'll admit really put a tear or two in my eye. But then in the final moment as Herc looks out to the sea he then says something which was heartfelt, "He was my Hero." He was also ours too .
