Marty has moved into the back room of Harry's Hardware. Just like a Taylor, never wanting to leave a hardware store. But you see, he's not there just because he wants to be close to tools all night long. He's having some marital problems. Not wanting Tim to find out, Marty swears Harry and Benny to secrecy...and you know that ain't gonna last. Tim comes in the hardware store, wanting to know why Marty's hair was all wet, but he books it to a job interview he may not actually have. After bribing Benny with a donut, the big-mouth says that Marty and Nancy split up, and the former is staying at the store. Tim wonders why his brother wouldn't be up front about any marital problems, so he goes to visit him at the store one right. It seems Marty and Nancy's marriage was on life support for a very long time, and finally they decided to pull the plug. Tim, ever the supportive and generous type, invites Marty to stay at his house, and when he gets the girls, they can stay there too. Naturally, he jumped at the chance, it was an offer he couldn't refuse. However, when Tim breaks the news to Jill, she's somewhat indifferent to it. Brad and Mark are very indifferent when Tim rearranges their bedrooms, allowing Marty to stay in Brad's, and the girls to stay in Mark's when they're over, resulting in both of them now moving down to Randy's old room.
The boys attempt to speak their minds with Uncle Marty as soon as he and the girls get moved in, but when he thanks them from the bottom of his heart for making the change, and seeing how sweet those girls are, made them decide to put a lid on it. Things get off to a shaky start at breakfast when Claire and Gracie won't eat their pancakes, as they're not like mom used to make. Tim presents a solution: chocolate chips. It seems Marty's job as a parent was made much easier, thanks to Uncle Tim and Aunt Jill stepping in to make sure they're taken care of while he's bustling from job to job. I'm sure he's grateful. Well now, on to Tool Time, where Tim brings on Claire and Gracie to help with the project. They begin by reciting a bunch of Tim's catchphrases, and I don't mean grunting. Yeah, they've really bonded with those girls. Everything is going great. But unfortunately, even on the brightest and sunniest days, there can be clouds. Marty develops a big chip on his shoulder and feels he and the girls are imposing, especially after he witnesses how well they're getting along with their aunt and uncle, and so he wants to move them back in with their mom. What a selfish prick, and after all Tim has done for him. Bending over backwards, being sensitive, changing his whole personality for him. But, in light of the Thanksgiving season, Tim and some turkey pieces pay Marty a visit, as he's now back at Harry's. They get to talking...in a nut shell, Marty is upset because he can't catch a break, he's jealous of Tim's success, and now he feels that he and Jill are doing a better job of raising the girls than him. He says he admires Marty for his efforts, saying they could never replace him as a parent, and then the two share some turkey. So I think it all worked out and Marty and the girls will be staying. There's a little time left, so let's see what Wilson has in his basement...a whole cavern! Wow. That was unexpected.
I like this episode, it's all heart, it shows the closeness of family, and they don't let bad jokes get in the way of sentiment. In other words, well written. Marty is usually a jerkoff whenever Tim and Jill try to help him out, and here is where it's very evident. Sure, the man's got pride, he wants to show his children he can be a good provider, but at the same time, this is something you can't go through alone. Marty should thank his lucky starts he has Tim and Jill to step in and lend a hand when things go wrong. Also, the tagged on ending with Wilson's cavern basement was a nice touch. This can be classified as a Thanksgiving episode and it really captures the spirit of the holiday. Home Improvement holiday episodes always do. I definitely recommend Thanks, But No Thanks. It's funny, heartfelt, and genuine. See it soon. Marty may be a jerk, but at least he went and had himself two adorable, yet precocious little girls.
