Al prepares himself for another day of Fool Time when Heidi comes by to drop him an unexpected bombshell: you remember Ilene, Al's old girlfriend? Well, she's engaged. Al is shocked, realizing that Ilene has moved on and made a change, while he has not. Heidi all the while is so happy for Ilene and she gloats it in front of Al, because she's a thoughtless dummy. So let's get Fool Time started. Today, they're talking about sharpening tools, though today, Al himself isn't so sharp. He's down in the dumps over Ilene, and because he's 40 and unmarried. He becomes a real space cadet, making the show even duller than usual. Tim tells him to get his act together or he's out on his ass. So, Al over-sharpens the knife, ruining it. I'm sorry, but is any of this supposed to be funny? I haven't laughed once. After the show, Al tells Tim what's bugging him and his friend tells him he needs to get out more...to places other than the Taylors' for dinner. So when Al stops by, he keeps getting in the way and the family less-than-subtly hints that they'd prefer he were somewhere else. Al is desperate to find a date. He tried the internet, but as you know, back then dating sites were in their infancy, so he had himself a Craigslist-style date. Jill suggests a singles' bar, but recommends Al take a friend with him. It would be too awkward with Wilson, Benny is a lady repellent, so his only other option would be...Tim.
So after Jill nags him over how he looks, saying he's got to look like HE'S the one cruising for chicks, a reluctant Tim goes with Al to the first seedy singles bar they could find. They must have some luck, because almost the instant they sit down, two babes, a blonde and brunette, Kathy and Donna respectively, spot them. You can tell right off the bat these girls have taste, because they don't watch Tool Time. Al tells them all about it, saying HE'S the star and that Tim is his assistant. Al hits if off with Kathy, while Donna takes a shine to Tim. The Tool Man manages to get them out before it goes any further, but Al makes another date for the next night. After the ladies leave, Tim and Al start bickering and pointing fingers, but still, for some reason, Tim decides to keep the date...so he can break up with Donna. I wonder why he didn't tell her he was married the previous night? I dunno, if I were married to Jill, I probably wouldn't admit it. So, back to the singles' dive, where Al and Kathy still hit it up, and Donna comes on strongly with Tim. Finally, he can take no more and he spills the beans about being married and about being the actual star of Tool Time. Tim had let down Donna as easily as he could, but she took offense, and Kathy took offense because Donna is her friend, then they get up and leave, the no- account tramps! But maybe this outing wasn't a total loss, as Al seems to have strengthened his confidence. That, and Al finds a hot little number sitting by herself, building things out of swizzle sticks. She might be the one! As for Tim, he finds himself hit on by a bouncer named Richard who's into jazz.
Well, this one really sucked. The writing was atrocious and the jokes were about as funny as a root canal. Where do I start? First, the way Heidi broke the news to Al was horribly ill-conceived, but being a woman, I guess she was happy for a fellow woman getting married...but to a man, the poor thing. Second, Al being unprofessional on Tool Time, very out of character. Finally, why did Tim have to go with him to the singles' bar? I think it would've been funnier had he gone with Wilson. I can just imagine Wilson getting all the girls and Al pretending he knows something about literature. That would've been HILARIOUS. But I guess Tim Allen's contract stipulates he can't be out of an episode for more than 2 minutes, so it had to be him. At least he was strong and stayed faithful to Jill and didn't let that Donna weaken him. So, the script sucked, the acting sucked, this whole lousy episode sucked. I HATED it! Please do yourself a favor and skip The Dating Game. It loses! I mean, I can relate to Al, being a single man myself (big shock, right?) and it isn't fun what he's going through...so why play it for laughs? It's like that Lonely Guy movie with Steve Martin. I didn't laugh, I felt sorry for the guy. What a morbid concept.
