MORE DRAMA WITH THE BAD BANK ROBBERS
tcchelsey29 January 2023
Skip Fickling was the author behind HONEY WEST. He churned out eleven detective novels between 1957 and 1961, all about a smooth female detective for a change of pace. Reportedly, he named his character "Honey" after his wife, which he credited for helping him with ideas. He chose "West" as a last name due to the fact that he loved the west coast, himself born in Long Beach, CA. This tense episode is very much in tune with Skip's character and work, more of a noirish tale as Honey attempts to nab a ring of bank robbers, posing as a teller. Very clever.

This gets interesting and really violent (for a dark comedy type show) as the lugs methodically unlock a large bank vault, coming off more as an episode of PETER GUNN! The shootout is one to watch. A solid supporting cast with Anthony Eisley and Howard McNear (ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW) as Mr. Tweedy? McNear was hilarious and made a career out of playing retiring, befuddled gents. Look for BOWERY BOY alumnus Billy Benedict as Farley. Benedict always turned up in bits on tv for decades, so well recognized and fondly remembered. Jerry Hopper did a fine job directing here, the man behind such tv adventures as VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA. One not to pass up. SEASON 1 EPISODE 16. Finally out on dvd.

Honey and the Bank Robber

Honey goes undercover as a bank teller to investigate a series of bank robberies.

Overall, A Nice Little Till to Tap is a solid enough episode, but it's well below average. This episode has a decidedly different feel to it when compared with other episodes. "Fun" is exchanged for "realism" (at least as realistic as Honey West gets). And A Nice Little Till to Tap is hurt by the extended, silent heist scenes. The makers may have been going for something like the heist in Rififi, but they failed. Instead of being tense, these scenes are just boring. A 4/10 is the best I can do.

For this episode's Name That Character Actor, the winner is Howard McNear. Of his 103 acting credits, he's best known for playing Floyd Lawson on the Andy Griffith Show.

A Nice Little Till to Tap

A gang of thieves are robbing banks and knowing their way around the alarm systems.

Honey West is undercover as a bank teller. She is being schmoozed by a charmer who sees her as an inside woman.

Sam looks onin jealousy but Honey West's cover is blown.

Sam needs to rescue her in time.

It seems Sam has plenty of time as the bulk of the episode is taken up with the gang trying to break into the bank vault.

At least Sam has the satisfaction to see the baddies get iced at the end.
