In this episode after leaving off Jacquelyne Schultz, a girl he's been courting at
her job at a convenience store, Alan Autry spots some folks his police instincts tell him are up to no good. A man and woman are going to rob said convenience store and Bubba interrupts them. The woman gets away, but Bubba shoots the man quite dead, sadly not until he kills the owner.
The Sparta Police identify the deceased as one of three outlaw brothers the Wormleys who have a code similar to the natives in Deliverance. Common sense would tell you to flee, but the remaining two Wormley brothers and their sister-in-law are staying in the vicinity for some payback to Autry.
As Carroll O'Connor says this family lives by a frontier code that goes back 200 years.
