A Stellar Episode -- Ann Jillian Shines -- A Must-See
kgraovac29 October 2023
Although Ann Jillian steals every scene she's in, this is the first episode to be centered around Cassie. This is a great showcase for both Ann and the character - as the story offers some growth for Cassie -she's given some humanity and thus, rendered even more likeable.

Cassie's nonchalance about dumping men comes back to bite her when she begins to have serious feelings for a suave Venezuelan named Ricardo - and can't deal with her own emotions. After going to great pains to demonstrate she's more than a good-time girl, he tells her he's moving back home without her. The B-story involves Sonny's attempt to impress a big-time record producer dining at Above the Top.

We start off with Cassie being her usual brassy self. She describes Ricardo as "a seven letter word for sex". The gals know something's up when Cassie asks Mario for cooking advice despite being a gal who only knows how to cook toast and "keeps clothes in her kitchen". When she attempts to prepare a romantic dinner for Ricardo they all pitch in and converge on Cassie's apartment for back up with all the necessary accoutrements just in case she gets into trouble.

There is a great scene in the lounge where they all discuss Cassie's love life. Ricardo charms all the ladies but then Cassie announces she's dumping him because he makes her nervous and feel out-of-sorts. Lois and Jan both give it to her straight and tell her what Cassie is feeling is love and she should be thrilled that she's found it. Ann Jillian wears a flattering blue suede off-the-shoulder fringe dress in this scene.

The next day, after she's been dumped, the girls all run to the lounge to support Cassie, and Mario - in a sweet fatherly gesture -- prevents Nancy from interrupting them. Cassie puts on a tough front to hide her devastation until Lois convinces her that having a good cry over it is the best remedy. There is a beautiful scene between the two that rivals any such similar scene THE GOLDEN GIRLS ever did.

One of the funniest moments thus far for Sonny occurs when it's revealed he has mistaken a trio of plumbers for the record executives and makes a panicked announcement from the piano.

This is another fantastic Season 1 episode and one of the best of the entire series. It makes it all the more painful that this cast was dismantled just six episodes later. ABC should have scheduled this show after THREE'S COMPANY and kept the original cast intact for at least another full season.

The current version airing on TV and streaming services is missing the following footage: Jan is helping Lois with a crossword puzzle in the lounge and Dot arrives offering to treat everyone to a night out because of an acting job that recently paid off.

The tag scene is missing where Dot takes up a collection to help Sonny pay for the bar tab he took care of for the plumbers and Cassie is seen making a date over the telephone.

SONGS: Sonny sings "Misty" and "I Write the Songs".
