Jan's #MeToo Moment
kgraovac30 October 2023
Jan goes on a date with her Economics professor but finds he's a dullard outside the classroom. She declines his request for an encore so he threatens to flunk her unless she jumps into the sack.

Season 1 may seem heavy with Jan episodes but the truth is, Barrie Youngfellow does her best work on the series in these early spotlight episodes. Nothing in the subsequent seasons comes close, but that is because of the stellar writing here.

The whole sexual harassment aspect could have come off as strident had the girls been ranting about it (see DESIGNING WOMEN) but the writers instead cleverly have guest star Priscilla Morrill - as the Dean - explain to Jan exactly what she's up against.

Having the professor (Terry Kiser) NOT be an obvious hunk was a smart move too because it shows that Jan was first attracted to his mind (the script does mention this, but the casting definitely helps). Kiser doesn't play the part over-the-top sleazy either, making the situation more realistic.

The best parts are when Lois tries to keep Jan reigned in during the meeting with the Dean; and when Jan confronts Kiser and basically calls him a rapist, in a roundabout way.

Not a particularly funny episode, it's more an issues-oriented one, but it's done with subtlety and taste and is still miles above the syndicated era of this show.

SONGS: Sonny performs "Too Young".
