Some (Small) Sweet Character Moments
kgraovac23 November 2023
All of the girls' petty arguments seem, well...petty -- after Jan is rushed into emergency surgery due to pregnancy complications; Howard receives a job offer from a burger chain trying to class up its image.

Even though this is the penultimate episode of the series, it is more fitting as a finale than the one that follows - which is basically another clip show.

Amy and Ginger argue over a complexion brush that Ginger has lost. Jan is angry that the heirloom platter she loaned Dot was broken when Dot and her boyfriend had sex on it. When Jan realizes something is wrong with the baby and needs to get to the hospital, Dot immediately grabs her hand and the argument is forgotten. It's a small moment but the syndicated era had so little of these, it stands out. Also nice is the part where Nancy admonishes Amy and Ginger about their argument and is worried about Dot "She sounded so alone" waiting at the hopsital.

Danny Thomas makes another Special Guest Star appearance but not as Dr. Danny like in Season 3. Here he's the Angel of Death whom Jan meets in the operating room when she actually dies on the table. Her spirit leaves her body and she begs Danny to let her live.

This episode has a nice surprise when dishwasher Frankie (Dan Frischman) pops up in a kitchen scene. He hasn't been seen since Season 2. Too bad they couldn't have had Ann Jillian or any of the other former waitresses written into the episode for old times' sake.

There is a three-month time jump in the last scene where Jan is shown returning to work with a healthy baby boy and all's well... until little Mikey makes a boom-boom on Uncle Sonny.

It's a decent episode but the cast deserved better. Too bad the writing just never reached the heights of THE GOLDEN GIRLS or even the better years of EMPTY NEST.

David Leisure ("Charley Deitz" on EMPTY NEST) has a cameo where he tosses a coin into Sonny's tip jar.

Great episode, plus a crazy credit

This episode is great! It marks Danny Thomas's second & final performance. There is a touching moment with Nancy telling the girls how delicate life is & treat each other well. In the ending credits, there is a portion that says Roger was not played by Roger Garrett. I love the part when the baby tinkled on Sonny & the looks between Paul & the baby. This episode shows how fragile life can really be & that our loved ones are a blessing. I also love the way they constantly smell Danny's cigar smoke. "It smells like a cigar!" Interesting how he used the bed pan as an ash tray. This is such a great show! The characters interact so well with one another.
