Chippendales? Springsteen? This Must Be 1985
kgraovac5 November 2023
Above the Top is host to a weight loss convention called Pounds Off Now. There are lots of puns and cracks about food. The waitresses try to be sympathetic but by the end they get fed up (get it) and start cracking fat jokes. The snowflakes of 2023 would have this episode "canceled" for certain.

In one scene, Jan meets a former classmate whom she doesn't recognize because the woman's gained so much weight. In the ABC era, they would have made this the main story, but here it only takes up about 2 minutes of the episode.

The A-plot concerns the arrival of Amy's father for a visit - or is it? He has plans to take his daughter back home to Texas, away from this "hot bed of sin and corruption". "That's why I came here" states Cassie, in the episode's best line.

Amy doesn't want to leave and Dot - who watched SOME LIKE IT HOT on TV the previous night --announces this bizarre plan to disguise Amy in male drag and have her join an all-male band. Yes, Dot acts very weird in this episode.

Cassie corners Amy's Daddy in the elevator - with Nancy running around like a panicking fool when Cassie stops it in between floors. Jan ends up giving them the final push to bring father and daughter together again.

Dot asks Jan to join her at Chippendales after work but Jan is going to stand in line for Springsteen tickets - how very 1985!

The girls debut yet another version of the uniform in this episode. They look like German Oktoberfest uniforms in burgundy.

The episode title is a play on words of the 1980-81 Witt Thomas sitcom I'M A BIG GIRL NOW starring Diana Canova. It was a cute show that also starred Danny Thomas as her father.
