New Season With Unusual Guest
dougdoepke23 May 2017
I was curious to see how Jack would fit an unlikely guest like evangelist Billy Graham into a comedy show. Like real professionals, they all managed with laughs and dignity intact. Frank Nelson gets an amusing bit as a squealing inept usher, along with regulars Day and Wilson who Jack makes fun of. And for old time radio fans, band member Frankie Remley makes an appearance. For years Benny and Phil Harris got automatic laughs from Remley's legendary drinking habits. Anyway, Graham gets Jack to try comedy by saying nice things instead of his usual barbs. So, Jack does and even the niceties skit is funny. Rev. Graham gets to sign off with a Biblical quote extolling the power of peace, something no one would disagree with. All in all, Jack's in fine form to lead off his 1963 season, with cast and comedic deadpan wonderfully intact.
