Some old country vendetta
bkoganbing26 February 2021
Maria Schell and Herb Edelman are wonderful as a Montegrin princess in exile and her loyal retainer from the old country. The two are on a quest to recover some lost jewelry that the mother of one of the local Mafia families has in its possession.

Telly Savalas and Manhattan South get involved when there's a shooting incident at the church that Mafia kingpin Harry Goz has earmarked as their personal chapel. More important Vivian Nathan as Goz's mother is keeping some very deep secrets going back to Sicily during World War 2.

You never think of Herb Edelman as an action hero, but does that man show us some moves here.

One of the best episodes from Kojak's fourth season.

KOJAK Episode with Maria SCHELL
ZeddaZogenau22 March 2024
In episode 11 (The Princess / The Pride and the Princess) of season 4, Theo Kojak (ACADEMY AWARD nominee Telly SAVALAS) has to deal with a Swiss-Austrian world star.

Maria SCHELL (1926-2005) plays a nun who is actually an emigrated Yugoslavian princess and is on the hunt for family jewelry with her loyal bodyguard (Herb EDELMAN), which is in the hands of a notorious mafia family. SCHELL and especially Herb EDELMAN, who is best known as the ex-husband of "Golden Girl" Beatrice ARTHUR, show unexpected action qualities here.

After her phenomenal beginnings in the German-speaking film industry (AS LONG AS YOU ARE THERE (1953) / THE RATS (1955), Maria Schell conquered the screens in France (GERVAISE) and Italy (LE NOTTI BIANCHI) and achieved two BAFTA AWARD nominations (in 1954 for THE HEART OF THE MATTER and in 1957 for GERVAISE) finally to Hollywood. Here she snatched the role of Grushenka in THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV from Marilyn Monroe, starred in glossy westerns (THE HANGING TREE / CIMARRON) and became one of the most popular in those years highest paid female Hollywood stars. When offers became a little rarer in the 1970s, Maria Schell also made a few television appearances, such as here on KOJAK.

Of course, Kevin DOBSON (KNOTS LANDING) is there as Bobby Crocker as the assistant to the lollipop-sucking boss.
