The old neighborhood
bkoganbing3 January 2021
In this Kojak episode the Manhattan South Squad is investigating a new wrinkle on th protection racket being masterminded by Brad Dexter. During a brawl started by his hoods at a bar a citizen is killed.

If you watch Goodfellas you have a fair idea what happens o any bar/restaurant this gang gets a hold on. You also see in Joe Pesci a good read on James Sutorius one of the leg breakers Dexter employs.

Sutorius is from Kevin Dobson's old neighborhood and they go back quite a ways. Dobson has a real character conflict.

Some of Kevin Dobson's best moments from the series are here.

'Crocker' Takes Center Stage

Warning: Spoilers
This was the first episode in which "Det. Crocker" got some major air time. Oh, it's still Kojak solving the case but it hits some hard for "Bobby" as one of the bad guys - maybe even the killer - might be his old boyhood pal "Benny" (James Sutorius) It takes awhile "Crocker' (Kevin Dobson) to accept this as Kojak and the crew work on a case of a gang which is into extortion. One night, while threatening one bar owner and then trashing the place, a man trying to help a victim is shot and killed. That's when this extortion racket really gets police attention.

Crocker, Benny and his fiancé "Marie" (Carol Demas) all share the spotlight in this somewhat-emotional story. The big boss, "Arnie Naylor" doesn't appear often but Brad Dexter makes him into a memorable gangster. Michael Delano is also riveting as the undercover cop "Valano."

Overall, a great episode with a lot of interesting characters.
