Jonathan Harris visits the Land of the Giants
mgmstar12821 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This episode leans more towards fantasy than science fiction overall.

It was nice to see Jonathan Harris play such a different character from his Dr. Zachary Smith from LOST IN SPACE in this episode. It is also a kick to hear so many of the sound effects used from LOST IN SPACE here too.

Once again, Fitzhugh becomes more and more like Dr. Smith in his greedy and self centered ways to get back home.

The series also seems more complete now that Betty seems to be back again (hopefully permanently). At one point, when the others leave the Senator's home, Betty has mysteriously disappeared, but then rejoins the others. Where had she gone is never explained.

When Irwin Allen Attacks.
copper196320 October 2006
Something has always bothered me about this particular tale. No, not the fact that this storyline would never see the light of day in our more paranoid times. The culprit in question is the visual trick performed by Jonathan Harris' "Pied Piper" character. Occurring just after the credits, the visual effect has a hypnotic quality. Where did it come from and where did it go? Perhaps straight to a present day director named Spike.

Spike Lee has a visual signature in his films, not unlike the shooting star Steven Spielberg employs, where he floats his actors in mid-air like a street magician, moving them slowly toward the camera lens as the camera pulls back. This (Elia) Kazanian maneuver turns up here, in all places, on Irwin Allen's darkest science fiction series--Land of the Giants. The "little people" are drawn to a pleasant sound coming from the distance. Four of our wayward travelers are elevated from the alien turf by the piper's soothing flute solo. They rise as if attached to an inclined people-mover, and are deposited into a cage like a quartet of cuckoo birds. This effect strikes me as being very similar to the one Spike utilizes in his movies. Could he have been inspired by the "Master of Disaster?" He would have been the right age. Maybe, I'm out on a limb on this one. But I would like to ask.

Never Fear, Smith is Here!
richard.fuller15 August 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Guest-starring Jonathan Harris as the infamous pied piper, an alien who goes around galaxies and planets using his pipe to manipulate persons to do his will.

At the beginning, when he has Fitzugh, Valerie, Betty and Mark under his spell (Barry can't keep up and gets left behind), we see first Kurt Kaznar and Deanna Lund, then Don Marshall and Heather Young, on a delightful little moving platform (that we don't see) as they are whisked away by the seductive music.

After thwarting the piper's plan to steal the politician's child away, we contend with the piper making a deal of sorts with Fitzugh.

A nice episode, mainly for seeing Jonathan Harris.

He isn't Dr. Smith, so he doesn't try to be Dr. Smith, but still it is nice to see him again.

Even in that red and green elf outfit. sigh.

Saved by Jonathan Harris

I've found that this second season is awful compared to the first which is a shame. Jonathan Harris does a great job, but I've decided that little Barry must go. Would the Piper please take him?
