Who's Looking After the Cafe Then?

So we approach the end of the second era of The Last of the Summer Wine. Actor Brian Wilde was unhappy with the scripts for series 8 and had to be persuaded in taking part. Maybe writer Roy Clarke and director Alan Bell thought they could persuade him to return the year after.

Alas it was not to be. This is Foggy's farewell but it is subdued, maybe they should had used the scene of the trio walking in the sunset from The Loxley Lozenge at the end of this episode instead.

Ivy needs to go somewhere but will certainly not trust Crusher to mind the cafe on his own. So she gets Mr Crabtree to run the place in her absence who unfortunately gets injured and has to be taken to hospital.

The trio decide to help out Crusher run the cafe in their own incompetent manner. As a customer remarks, the food might not be good but the floor show is great.

Wally Batty gets to do another scene stealing turn at the tailor's when getting fitted for a new suit. Nora is sick and tired of going out with him with his old suit. Wally replies, we could go out less!

The slapstick comedy comes with the aid of Wesley's van to hold some ladders so Compo and Clegg can clean the cafe's sign. Wesley's fondness of rock music mean things go awry but at least Compo gets a glimpse of Nora disrobing through her bedroom window. A sight for Compo but not sure of the viewing audience.

The later Christmas special, Uncle of the Bride would introduce a new character, Seymour (Wesley's brother in law.) Brian Wilde would go on to do the sitcom Wyatt's Watchdogs. It was atrocious, no wonder he would later return.
