Easier Being A Boy In Tom Sawyer's Day
ccthemovieman-117 January 2007
The weekend's here and a disaster occurs - the television breaks. The boys are bored to death because it's raining out and they've seen the film at the local theater. There is nothing to do, if TV is not available.

Ward suggests reading a book. The boys think that sounds like punishment because they make you read books in school. Ward looks his collection over and gives them "Tom Sawyer." The boys actually enjoy the book. Wally is such a good brother; he reads the story aloud to Beaver....even with a flashlight at one o'clock in the morning (until their mom discovers them still up)

The next day offers a lot better weather so Ward goes out to paint the garage doors. Then he gets a phone call from Fred Rutherford, who needs him a big vote at the club. The boys offer to paint, quoting Tom Sawyer (he painted) so Ward can't say no. The boys find out painting isn't as much fun as it seemed to be to Tom in the book. Friends stop by but Wally and Beaver can't talk them into "having fun" until little "Benji" comes along. What he is does is pretty funny and leads to the lesson of the day.

Goof for Garage Painters
janet-conant11 August 2020
I was not able to access Goof category for this episode (tried all avenues) so submitting through Reviews. In the second scene Ward enters the boys' room and pushes the door closed. The door is slightly open and way to the right, in camera view, a man's hand grabs the knob and pulls the door shut.

Sometimes like imitates art; here, it doesn't.
pensman24 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
June is at the yellow pages looking for a TV repair man; the TV is down and the boys have nothing to do for the weekend without a TV. Ward suggests the boys read a book; Beaver wants to know why they are being punished. Ward brings them The Adventures of Tom Sawyer to read together. Beaver wants to know if there are pictures.

It's night and the boys are in bed together reading the book under the covers. June comes in and YELLS AT THEM FOR READING A BOOK, it's one o'clock in the morning. It's morning, the rain has stopped so Ward has decided to paint the garage doors. June finds the boys still reading so SHE STOPS THEM and sends them out to play. Ward is interrupted by Fred Rutherford, Ward is needed for a meeting at the country club. Wally and Beaver offer to paint the garage doors. June has been reading the book and June wants to know if Ward read Tom Sawyer recently; Tom lied, cursed, and smoked among having other bad habits. Ward says he doubts if the boys will take the book literally. We know not completely literally, but just enough to make a mess.

Wally and Beaver are painting but the job is becoming tiresome. Not to mention messy. Lumpy stops by to see if Wally can go to the movies. They can't because they are having fun. They invite Lumpy to have fun, but Lumpy isn't completely stupid. Larry Mondello stops by but he doesn't want to have any fun either. Beaver is wondering why this isn't turning out like Tom Sawyer. While Wally is in the house, little Bengie stops by and he's willing to have fun. So much fun he pours a can of green paint over himself. Mrs. Bellamy stops by and blames Wally and Beaver for her son being green. June has had it. The boys are to stop, clean up the mess, and go upstairs and clean up. June is convinced the boys will soon start imitating Tom in other ways. So, when Ward gets home, June wants him to go upstairs and stop all the Tom Sawyer reading. The boys already know the book is fiction. Wally says he knows, if he went around acting like Tom today people would think he was a delinquent. Ward reaffirms Wally's thinking and adds while Tom might have done some of those things, it was in a different time. Wally understands and Beaver is pretty sure he gets it too.

Ward come down to put the book back in the bookcase and June wishes it had never come out. Ward defends Tom Sawyer and reading. Ward insists reading promotes imagination, ideas, even insight into people. No, the overall benefits one gains are too important to stop the boys from reading. Even if we get a green Bengie. Yes, affirms Ward, even if we occasionally get a green Bengie.

Earlier on Ward mentions how much he loved to read when he was a boy. He even borrowed his mother's library card so he could read twice as many books. I too read a lot when I was a boy. When I was a boy the library offered three library cards: child, high school, and adult. One of my proudest days was when the head librarian at the main branch awarded me an adult card when I was in the eighth grade. She recognized me for being the voracious reader that I was. During my teaching years I found library cards were carried by only one in five students. Many kids just didn't grasp the idea of reading a book for fun. If a book wasn't assigned then indeed reading it was a punishment.

This in another episode where June disappoints me. It's implied throughout the series that June didn't go to a college but to a finishing school. It seems being a Bronson, June's family name, means the males get an education; the females, something less. It's a be a good thing that Ward received an education in the Navy and one at college.

BEAVE, WALLY AND THE LITTLE RASCALS!
tcchelsey22 December 2023
About this time, the famous Little Rascals, originally known as OUR GANG comedy shorts were being released to tv. There's no question that producers and writers Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher had to have seen a few of those classic, old episodes, if not grew up on them back in the day.

Keeping that in mind, this goofy episode takes a totally different slant. The weekend brings some not too good news when the tv set breaks down. What to do? It's raining and boring, so Ward suggests that Beave and Wally do what everybody did in the old days --- read a book!

Tom Sawyer comes to mind and, actually, the guys become addicted to the classic tale, so much that they are caught in the middle of the night(!) reading the adventure. Have flashlight will travel. You have to admit, it's a funny scene. This all very cleverly relates to the next day's project when Ward asks Beave and Wally to paint the garage doors.

What next? They become Tom Sawyer devotees and do what their hero would do --have lots of fun painting! Ya think? This is where the "Little Rascals" come in as the guys make an absolute mess of things, and with their friends stopping by to watch the show. Best of it all is little Bengie Bellamy, played so well by Joey Scott. He was a natural, who could have been one of the Little Rascals himself!

He has a date with a can of paint, and do the math!

A jaw dropping, disaster of disasters. And to tell you the truth, there's also a touch of Laurel and Hardy here too! No question.

The biggest surprise was the introduction of cute Joey, who obviously had a future in the series, sort of playing a very curious kid who could cause lots and lots of damage. Well meaning, of course! Joey was so popular he only appeared a few times on the show before being cast as a regular member on the series NATIONAL VELVET. The rest is history. Joey grew up and became one of the most respected producers in Hollywood, behind such hits as GROWING PAINS in the 80s and SISTER, SISTER in the 90s, and many other top tv shows.

What a story!

Sit back and enjoy the messy view, coupled with memories of Tom Sawyer and the Rascals. Does not get any better than this. A gem.

The best of SEASON 2 remastered Universal dvd box set.

June is awake and dressed at 1 AM
LukeCoolHand24 June 2022
This was the silliest episode I have seen so far. The boys and their friends making a mess painting the garage doors and getting paint all over their clothes - Beaver even sticks a brush with a lot of paint on it in his back pocket. And what in the world was June up at 1 AM fully dressed and barging into the boys' room and catching them with a flashlight reading Tom Sawyer ?
