Fool me once, fool me 100 times and I really am a schlamazel
pensman13 April 2017
Warning: Spoilers
An episode with two plot lines. The important one is with Beaver still trying to learn not to be a victim. The second is Wally trying to repair an Army surplus walkie-talkie he got off of Eddie Haskell. The second plot line really doesn't go anywhere, but it may bring back memories of scouring through crummy Army Surplus buildings buying only junk a kid would see as valuable.

It's picture day and Beaver is wearing his suit to school; it's for a school class picture that will go into the yearbook. Gilbert convinces Beaver to make a face during the taking of the class picture. The picture is a bit of a rush job as it has to get to the printer tomorrow. Miss Landers asks if the photographer wants to take a second picture, but he believes one will be fine. Too bad the photographer didn't listen, Beaver was the sucker, again I can't recall when one of Beaver's friends didn't get him into trouble through a dare; and Beaver fell for every one. This episode rings true. I spent a few years teaching in middle school, and you really had to look at those group pictures carefully so they wouldn't be a surprise. I recall one year when staff volunteers had to remain and use a black marker to cover up a rather spectacular hand gesture an eighth grader got into a picture, and it wasn't caught until the book arrived for distribution.

Gilbert is giving Beaver the horselaugh because he was dumb enough to fall for the dare. Beaver says Gilbert's a rat. Gilbert says he may be a rat, but at least he isn't a dumb rat like Beaver.

Mrs. Rayburn calls to have Ward come to her office to discuss Beaver. And when Beaver confesses to Wally, Wally says he is going to get it from dad. Beaver says their dad isn't a hitting dad; Yes, Wally says but this is the time it could turn him into one. Ward's upset and Beaver has to apologize to Mrs. Rayburn and Miss Landers, plus he's grounded for a week. No spanking, he's too old for that. He can be reasoned with to understand the magnitude of what he has done.

Fortunately, the photographer figured a way to cover the Beaver's face to avoid the picture being totally ruined. If only they had Photoshop back when. I doubt Beaver has really internalized this lesson, the series needs him the way he is. One thing for sure, kids haven't changed. Today a number of them post their acts of folly on a number of video sharing sights like Vimeo, YouTube , or Metacafe hoping for fame. Sometimes a teacher's worst fear is an edited clip making them look foolish will be posted and a reputation will be ruined. Yes, kids are that devious. It's not always a harmless prank. On occasion the videos have brought lawsuits. This isn't 1961 anymore, it's 2017 and sometimes we have to wonder what consequences that 56 years of technology have wrought.

Beaver again pays for the crimes of others .

Warning: Spoilers
Not only did Gilbert actively put Beaver up to the prank, but he rubs it in afterwards. Gilbert getting away with this completely unscathed, is a serious weakness in the shows concept. Where as Eddie Haskell was fun, Gilbert was just mean and unlikeable.

A hard lesson that some never learn
ronnybee211227 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Beaver gets talked-into making a goofy face during the yearly school photo. His classmate standing next to him for the group photo suggests it would be a great idea for the both of them to make a silly face right as the photo is taken. When the moment arrives,Beaver makes a silly face as planned but his supposed accomplice, the instigator of the whole dog-gone thing, does NOT make a face ! Beaver is the only one that made a silly face,so HE, Beaver is in trouble! His classmate set him-up,cheesed him hard he did !

The only hope, that perhaps the photo could be re-taken,is immediately shot-down,as there simply isn't time. The photo will be printed in the yearbook,as-is.

Beaver's teacher,'Miss Landers', finds out about Beaver's goofy-face in the photo, either from being one of the first to see the photo after it was developed,or perhaps the photographer called her right after he developed it. The cat is out of the bag,in other words. The lady principal of the school,'Cornelia Rayburn' is upset at the news, and calls the Cleaver household. Wife June Cleaver answers the phone and she is asked to send 'Mister Cleaver' to the school ASAP! The lady principal 'Cornelia Rayburn' is not taking any chances with Mom being a softy, she wants to go right to 'Mister Cleaver' !

Father 'Ward Cleaver' goes to the school, and he naturally gets an earfull. Ward apologizes as best he can and heads home to see Beaver.

The incident is discussed, rehashed, and eventually laid to rest,to make room for the next adventure!

Incidents like what happened in this episode happen to everyone,it's all part of growing up and learning!

I cannot help but notice and remember how important it was to be a good student,a good classmate, and a polite,well-behaved person both in and out of school. Nobody wanted to be the 'bad example', people cared about their reputations whether they realized it or not!

Would anyone be that dumb?

Warning: Spoilers
Beaver is 12 or 13 and the writers have him likes he 6 mentally. I can't picture an intelligent kid his age falling for the old trick by Gilbert. But it makes for a funny episode.

THE BIG SCHOOL PICTURE SCANDAL!
tcchelsey23 February 2024
Every year our class took a photo, generally in elementary school, this episode was ALWAYS talked about. Always! Even our teachers would mention it --that's the scary part, and perhaps as a friendly reminder to be on our best behavior.

And so it goes... Beave prepares for the formal class photo, Gilbert tricks him into making a goofy face --ONLY he doesn't do it and Beaver gets faked out.

Once again! You really, really have to wonder as to who was the most dangerous friend Beave ever had; Larry or Gilbert or both???

So true to life story, again thanks to master writer Dick Conway. Does not get any better than this. Yes, I agree with the last reviewer. When angry Mrs. Rayburn (Doris Packer) calls the Cleaver home, she insists on seeing Ward and NOT June. No mother sympathy allowed. OMG.

The funny catch to all this, especially if you are a tv buff, Doris Packer was also appearing on DOBIE GILLIS at the time, and her son was a lot like Gilbert!

What do you think about that?

Applause for Gage Clarke as Mr. Baxter. Gage was very popular in 50s cult and horror films, playing everything from ministers to doctors. He was fun to watch and is missed.

From SEASON 4 EPISODE 30 remastered.

Say "Cheese"!

Warning: Spoilers
(*Wally to Beaver quote*) - "You've got more polish on your face than you got on your shoes."

Beaver's 5th grade class is having their picture taken for the school yearbook.

As expected, Beaver's false-friend, Gilbert dares him to do something that makes him out to be a jackass. (But Beaver does it anyway)

The outcome of this defiant act prompts the school principal, Mrs. Rayburn to contact Ward Cleaver to come in for a serious chat about Beaver's actions.
