An episode with two plot lines. The important one is with Beaver still trying to learn not to be a victim. The second is Wally trying to repair an Army surplus walkie-talkie he got off of Eddie Haskell. The second plot line really doesn't go anywhere, but it may bring back memories of scouring through crummy Army Surplus buildings buying only junk a kid would see as valuable.
It's picture day and Beaver is wearing his suit to school; it's for a school class picture that will go into the yearbook. Gilbert convinces Beaver to make a face during the taking of the class picture. The picture is a bit of a rush job as it has to get to the printer tomorrow. Miss Landers asks if the photographer wants to take a second picture, but he believes one will be fine. Too bad the photographer didn't listen, Beaver was the sucker, again I can't recall when one of Beaver's friends didn't get him into trouble through a dare; and Beaver fell for every one. This episode rings true. I spent a few years teaching in middle school, and you really had to look at those group pictures carefully so they wouldn't be a surprise. I recall one year when staff volunteers had to remain and use a black marker to cover up a rather spectacular hand gesture an eighth grader got into a picture, and it wasn't caught until the book arrived for distribution.
Gilbert is giving Beaver the horselaugh because he was dumb enough to fall for the dare. Beaver says Gilbert's a rat. Gilbert says he may be a rat, but at least he isn't a dumb rat like Beaver.
Mrs. Rayburn calls to have Ward come to her office to discuss Beaver. And when Beaver confesses to Wally, Wally says he is going to get it from dad. Beaver says their dad isn't a hitting dad; Yes, Wally says but this is the time it could turn him into one. Ward's upset and Beaver has to apologize to Mrs. Rayburn and Miss Landers, plus he's grounded for a week. No spanking, he's too old for that. He can be reasoned with to understand the magnitude of what he has done.
Fortunately, the photographer figured a way to cover the Beaver's face to avoid the picture being totally ruined. If only they had Photoshop back when. I doubt Beaver has really internalized this lesson, the series needs him the way he is. One thing for sure, kids haven't changed. Today a number of them post their acts of folly on a number of video sharing sights like Vimeo, YouTube , or Metacafe hoping for fame. Sometimes a teacher's worst fear is an edited clip making them look foolish will be posted and a reputation will be ruined. Yes, kids are that devious. It's not always a harmless prank. On occasion the videos have brought lawsuits. This isn't 1961 anymore, it's 2017 and sometimes we have to wonder what consequences that 56 years of technology have wrought.
