"Hong Kong Cruise" Set in... Beijing
fmartin-2139411 January 2022
Just wanted to point out that this episode, the crew and passengers visit Tiananmen Square, the Great Wall (I think the Badaling section?), the Imperial Palace, the Beijing Zoo, and the Ming Tombs all in like, four hours. Which would be impossible in real life. Also, there's no Chinese or Chinese-American representation - the Chinese are simple used as set dressing. The one character that is said to know their way around the area is... white. I know it was the 70's and times were different back then, but wow! It's a trip to see how things like this were approached back then.

Outside of that, the episode tries to cram too many storylines into its run-time while also wanting to serve up a visual journey around Beijing. It's cluttered and hard to recognize what's going on at any given point.

The Tragedy of Julie McCoy, Independent, Modern Woman
WalterKafka23 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Hong Kong is a photogenic city. Poverty is romantic. That music in the background is pretty silly. Gopher and Isaac wear trench coats and chase spy Gene Kelly. The spy stuff is especially stupid. They go to Jumbo Kingdom, the floating restaurant. I had to go and read about that. It capsized in 2022. I miss the days when politicians were concerned about morality. Ah! Those were the days! Will Donna Reed marry her Senator? There's always a way. Meanwhile, Julie has been exchanged for a newer model. She tells Vicki to 'Follow your heart.' Terrible advice. Julie McCoy will never have children. Imagine having so much money that it's a problem to stop spending it. On Kafka's Love Boat Scale, this episode gets 2 * out of a possible 4 *.
