M-SQUAD – Shot in the Dark -1958
This is the 28th episode of the 1957 to 1960 Crime series, M-SQUAD. The series ran for 117 episodes and features Lee Marvin as the headliner. Marvin is a Lt with the elite M-Squad unit of the Chicago Police.
There has been a series of shootings in Chicago with three people being wounded. The bullets all match and where fired by a rifle. Soon a fourth man is shot. This victim however is killed. The police soon dig up a possible suspect. The man is a known rifle owner. When the Police try to question him, he starts shooting at them.
The man, Clarke Gordon, is soon captured and given a round of the 3rd degree. Turns out the guy is suffering from a few loose screws in the brain-pan department. Marvin is sure that he is not the sniper. Marvin goes back over the dead man's records in case the Police missed something.
They did indeed miss some information. The dead man's father in law, Raymond Greenleaf, was not a fan of the dear deceased. There is a large insurance policy at play as well. Marvin figures, correctly, that Greenleaf has been shooting people to lay a false trail, before bumping off the son in-law. When confronted, Greenleaf goes for his rifle but Marvin is quicker off the draw. Greenleaf gets life in jail.
