The Introduction Of Hunnicutt And Potter!!
ellisel10 May 2007
The opening part of the episode had a quote from General Dwight D. Eisenhower saying "I will go to Korea." Another quote "A terrible place." from General Raymond W. Bliss described the atrocities of the Korean War. From there, Major Frank Burns became commanding officer to run the 4077th. Captain Pierce arrived at camp about fifteen minutes late for roll call. Naturally, Frank Burns became an authoritative commander in running the outfit; moreover, he maintained a strict adherence to the soldiers and nurses that stepped out of line in his command. Major Houlihan would obviously lay down the law in the camp -- as well.

Corporal O' Reilly told about Captain McIntyre's discharge from the Army. He then told Majors Burns and Houlihan about picking up the new replacement surgeon at Kimpo -- named Captain B.J. Hunnicutt. Captain Pierce -- against Major Burns's orders -- went along with Corporal O'Reilly to pick up the new replacement surgeon. Upon arriving at Kimpo, the introduction of B.J. Hunnicutt to the M*A*S*H 4077th outfit became prevalent to both Captain Pierce and Corporal O'Reilly on a permanent basis. After leaving Kimpo, they encountered the horrors of people being injured -- or killed -- in the surrounding areas of Korea.

Upon the conclusion of the episode, Colonel Sherman T. Potter became the permanent commander of the M*A*S*H 4077th. This inclusion was the brilliant start of the first episode of the 1975-1976 Television Season. Even Major Burns would be gracious -- albeit reluctantly -- to accept the role of being Second In Command in the outfit. The End Result: A Fat 10!! Perhaps A 10.5!!

The Big Transition: Part 1
Hitchcoc9 March 2015
Hawkeye comes back from a week of debauchery in Tokyo to find that Trapper has gotten his orders and has already left. Knowing that he has only had a two hour head start, Radar (with fear and major reluctance) and Hawkeye grab a jeep and head for Kimpo where he will depart. Frank and Margaret are now running the camp as they have in the past, like a true combat-ready facility. Of course, they are getting absolutely no respect. While in Kimpo, Radar is supposed to pick up B. J. Hunnicutt, Trapper's replacement. Unfortunately, they miss Trapper. Burns and Houlihan are drooling that a young new surgeon is coming and they can put their stamp on him. When Pierce and O'Reilly get there, someone steals their jeep. They meet Hunnicutt and begin to try to figure out what to do next. There is a marvelous scene in an officer's club. Things are set up nicely for the next episode.

Part 2

The guys grab a General's jeep and head back to the camp. Along the way, they run across a minefield where young women are sent to check for mines so it will be OK for the livestock to graze. When there is an explosion, Radar runs in, grabs the girl, and they take her to a hospital. After a flat tire, they encounter mortar fire and need to give service to some GI's who are moving down a road. It is a horrible scene. Hunnicutt is getting his baptism of fire. Meanwhile, Frank is setting things up for his arrival. Sadly, for Frank, they decide to stop at Rosie's Bar, and they get hammered and witness even more craziness. There is one last scene with the arrival of the new camp commander, Colonel Sherman T. Potter.

The changing of the guard
safenoe26 July 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I guess M*A*S*H fans fall into 2 camps...the original Alda/Rogers/Stevenson/Linville quartet, and the succeeding Alda/Farrell/Morgan/Odgen Stiers quartet. Anyway, this episode is a milestone as it represents the changing of the guard. I must admit, I greatly prefer the succeeding quartet as it give M*A*S*H a tougher edge rather than the madcap politically correct version under the first quartet.

At the end of this episode the camp announcement reads out the cast and character names of those permanently assigned to the 4077th. Anyway, this episode introduces B.J. Hunnicutt and Colonel Sherman Potter. Major Winchester joins later on.

Changes
kellielulu30 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Season four begins with Frank Burns in command of the 4077 . Fortunately it's mercifully short lived. It's also fortunate that the writers concentrated on Hawkeye on and on new surgeon BJ Hunnicutt and little of Frank and Margaret although they are more irritating than insufferable in this episode.

Hawkeye going against orders accompanies Radar who is to pick up BJ . Hawkeye is hoping to see Trapper before he leaves.

The rest of episode is an introduction to BJ and his introduction to Korea. He's clearly different from Trapper but he won't be what Frank and Margaret wanted . BJ has it a bit rough getting a little bit of everything on his way to camp but he's instantly likable and a dedicated doctor and family man . Next up we meet the new commander Col. Potter .
